Residents of Nyanga, Cape Town, helped themselves to crates of liquor that fell from a truck after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle earlier this week.

Western Cape police confirmed a case of common robbery was opened at the Nyanga police station on Thursday after residents descended on the truck in Emms Drive.

"It is alleged the truck driver lost control of after an Avanza that was in front of the truck suddenly stopped," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut told News24.

"The driver lost control and crates of liquor fell from the truck due to that."

In a video, presumably filmed by a bus passenger, residents looting the truck suddenly fled when police arrived and started firing rubber bullets.

Police said no one was arrested.
