WATCH: Police van drives over dog in Elsies River

02 March, 02:18 PM

A video has emerged of a SAPS van seemingly making no attempt to avoid a dog sleeping in the road, and driving over it.

According to SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham, the incident happened on Neptune street in Elsies River.

"The dog was taken to the Animal Anti-cruelty League (AACL) in Epping," she told News24. "I don't know what injuries the animal suffered at the hands of these SAPS members, but the vet ordered X-rays."

It is unclear whether or not the dog had to be put down.

Dr. Mpho Hlalele, general manager at the AACL, confirmed that the animal was brought in on Thursday by its owner, but was reluctant to comment further until "inspectors have concluded their investigations."

"Of course, there's been a massive public outcry over this video, but we cannot make assumptions," Hlalele said.

Abrahams added that the culprits are guilty of contravening the Animal Cruelty Act on two counts - first by causing harm to an animal, and secondly by not seeking help for its injuries.

Station commander brigadier Sonjani from the Elsies River Police Station said he was only made aware of the incident on Friday morning.

"We're looking into the matter, and still trying to find out if this is an officer from our station," Sonjani told News24.

"The registration is not clear in the video. We may need to track down the original source or building where this video was shot from to get more detail.

"Once the culprits are identified, there will certainly be disciplinary investigations and consequences."
