Two Sandton residents have turned this massive pothole in Lonehill, Johannesburg, into a makeshift swimming pool. Mitchell McQueen and Connor Sapire decided to take a dip in the hole after realising that a water pipe had burst.McQueen said that his cousin, Sapire, decided that it would be a great idea to take their pants off and go for a swim, since the water was clear at the time."He [Sapire] even brushed his teeth in the water," said McQueen."We were not scared of getting sick or anything, but after they fixed the leak the water got stagnant and not clear. So it is a little gross," said Sapire.SwimNews24 visited the two men as they went for their fourth swim in the water-filled hole. They arrived in their swimming shorts and with a small blue water float."When we first came here, everybody was shocked to find us swimming in the hole," said McQueen.Sapire told News24 that an old couple had spotted them and requested to take a video to create some awareness."Since that video was posted, it all just went viral from there," said McQueen."It's a waste of water and it's blocking the road, so for it to be fixed would be great," he added. Some residents passing by said municipal official had been spotted in the area on several occasions attending to the hole, but had never fixed it.Johannesburg Water communication manager Isaac Dhudhlu said he had received notification on 12 March that the burst pipe had been fixed."All that is outstanding is for the Johannesburg Road Agency to fill up the hole. They have to specially compact the soil from the bottom up and then redo the tar. We have sent in a request and waiting for it to be completed," he told News24.
