WATCH | President Cyril Ramaphosa to address South Africa on coronavirus

23 March, 08:24 PM

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on the coronavirus pandemic on Monday evening.

On Sunday, the president met with various stakeholders from business as well as political parties. Political leaders also had the opportunity to give him their views on the outbreak and the government's efforts to curb the disease, which is running rampant in several countries and has battered the global economy.

A statement by the Presidency said Ramaphosa would receive an update from the National Command Council on the coronavirus outbreak, and progress and challenges related to the implementation of recently-promulgated regulations on the state of disaster and other measures to protect the country, in this meeting.

Those regulations, among other things, stipulated that bars and eateries are not to serve alcohol after 18:00, and the circulating of fake news about the coronavirus could land a person in jail.

The council was expected to consider whether the measures currently in place to contain the spread of the virus were sufficient and what further measures were required.
