WATCH: Protesters and students in massive field brawl in Bloem

A Varsity Cup match between the University of the Free State and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was called off on Monday night after protesters and students swarmed the field and took each other on in a massive brawl in Bloemfontein. Watch.  

According to SARugbymag, the protesters, some of whom were armed, walked onto the field when Shimlas were leading 12-7 after 17 minutes.

Having refused to leave the field, they then clashed with fans before the police and university security defused the situation.

Play resumed at 7:40pm, roughly an hour after the match had been interrupted, with Shimlas going on to win 46-19.

According to Eyewitness News, the students were representing the Outsourcing Must Fall movement at the university, as part of a call to end the practice of hiring external companies to employ campus staff with few benefits
