2020-02-17 16:25

A vegetation fire in the Slanghoek Mountains near Rawsonville is still raging out of control.

Fire crews have been fighting the blaze since it started on Sunday morning. The runaway fire has destroyed 15 000 hectares of vegetation, but there has been no damage to any property in the area.

Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto told News24 that emergency teams were on the scene.

"There are currently 16 firefighters and 40 ground crew members, assisted by seven firefighting vehicles. Air support was called in to assist ground crews in preventing the fire from spreading to vineyards," she said.

On Sunday night, farmers assisted firefighters by wetting their vineyards that border the inferno, to prevent their crops from getting damaged.

Firefighting efforts was set to continue throughout Monday as crews try and get the fire under control.
