WATCH | State capture inquiry continues to focus on SAA

10 February, 11:15 AM

The state capture inquiry will continue to hear South African Airways-related evidence from Nontsasa Memela, the former head of procurement at South African Airways Technical (SAAT). SAAT forms part of SAA and provides it with technical support and maintenance of its aircraft.

Last week, Memela denied assisting a local aviation company with preparing documents that would assist it to secure a R1.2bn contract.

The commission also heard that rival senior officials connected to SAA appeared to be involved in intricate power plays to secure the backing of the powerful Gupta family in late 2012.

On Tuesday, former SAA chairperson Vuyisile Kona testified that he had found himself caught between the airline's powerful former chairperson, Dudu Myeni, and a former advisor to then public enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba, as both appeared to manoeuvre to stake their claim with the Guptas.
