WATCH: Student narrowly escapes attempted kidnapping in Rembrandt Park

05 September, 01:53 PM

Family members and friends of Charmaine Erick are at a loss for words after the 21-year-old was almost kidnapped in Rembrandt Park, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday afternoon.

"We are still in shock," Erick's sister, Pamela Dubazane told News24.

Dubazane said her sister had been walking home from the tertiary institution where she studies, when a car she didn't recognise pulled up next to her. The doors opened and the two male occupants asked Erick to get in.

"She refused and began to run away," said Dubazane.

When she didn't co-operate with the men, the one in the passenger seat jumped out and attempted to drag her into the car.

"She began screaming and fought with him."

Erick and the man became embroiled in a tussle and eventually she was able to free herself from his grip.

'Crying, in shock'

Since she was just a few metres from her home, she was able to race to safety.

"She was crying and in shock. But she didn't sustain any injuries," Dubazane said.

Dubazane told News24 she was certain the incident was an attempted kidnapping because the men did not ask Erick for any of her valuables at any point.

"They just wanted her to get inside the car."

The sisters have reported the incident to the police.

Sandringham police station commander Colonel Lindelani Ndlovu said they were in the process of opening a case of attempted kidnapping.

"We urge anyone with any information regarding the incident to please come forward," Ndlovu said.
