WATCH: Suspected Pretoria burglar caught breaking into school

23 November, 03:27 PM

A 30-year-old suspect was arrested while breaking into a Pretoria primary school.

In a video that circulated on social media, the suspect is seen climbing over a security gate to show police officers how he gained entry to the financial administrator's office.

In a statement to News24, Hermanstad Primary School principal, Jimmy Robberts said the security company alerted him to a possible security breach around 03:30 on Wednesday.

After further investigation, the security company discovered that a door to the school's administration offices had been unlocked by someone with a key.

''I immediately dressed, and arrived at the school at about 04:15, to look at the video footage, to see if we could identify the person,'' Robberts said.

The video footage revealed a person ripping out wires to the alarm and optical sensors before climbing over a gate into the financial administrator's office.

Realising that the person was still on the premises, police and security personnel discovered the suspect hiding inside the office and was placed under arrest.

''After investigating, we noticed that the culprit entered the administration building by breaking into the laundry room where the school's general assistants have their changing room.''

"The suspect broke into one of the lockers and used an assistants spare keys to enter the offices,'' Robberts continued.

According to Constable Simon Chokoe, spokesperson for the Hercules Police Station, the suspect has been charged with business burglary.

''The suspect will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court soon,'' Chokoe told News24.
