WATCH: Teary father of missing Hout Bay fisherman fears son has died

14 August, 08:58 PM

The family of missing fisherman Deurick van Blerk is losing hope as there are no leads on his whereabouts, his father Edward van Blerk told News24.

"We have little hope, but we feel that we have lost him," said an emotional Van Blerk. "We just want his body so that we can bury him."

The 25-year-old went missing at sea during an anti-poaching operation on Saturday.

"We have been sent from pillar to post and we are not getting any answers," said Van Blerk.

Protesters in Hangberg, Hout Bay took to the streets on Monday to "fight for their brother".

The violent protests, which started on Sunday, were sparked when an anti-poaching task team intercepted Van Blerk and two others, who had allegedly been fishing illegally in the early hours of Saturday.

Two people were arrested and their crayfish confiscated. Van Blerk apparently jumped overboard and, when he didn't return home, police opened a missing persons docket.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said the search will resume on Wednesday after it was suspended on Tuesday due to operational reasons.
