2020-01-16 18:45

Police are investigating a case of hijacking after a RAM courier vehicle was attacked east of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The van was carrying cellphone packages at the time of the robbery.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, the 58-year-old driver and passenger were held at gunpoint before two suspects drove off with the vehicle.

"Swift investigations by the police led to the recovery of the vehicle near the corner of Proctor and Bessie Street in Rhodesfield. The packages were, however, not found in the abandoned vehicle. It has since been confirmed by the complainant that the packages contained cellphones," said Peters.

A separate incident caught on CCTV, shows another RAM courier vehicle involved in a suspected attempted robbery. It is alleged that the incident happened in Spartan, Kempton Park.

The footage shows the driver and a passenger running from the vehicle when they notice a group of men approaching in a white SUV nearby.

The vehicle was left abandoned by both the occupants and the men who approached them.

It is unclear if any goods were taken. Police were unable to provide any information on this incident.
