16 March, 10:35 AM

On Tuesday evening, thousands of women turned out for the 'Women For Change' run/ walk through Tokai Forest, protesting violence against women and children. Watch.

The gathering was organised by Catch Me If You Can, Cape Town's largest all-women running group.

According to the event's Facebook page, 2400 women attended the event, while some runners said well over 3000 took part.

Participants paid tribute to teenager Franziska Blöchliger - who was allegedly raped and brutally murdered in the area last Monday - along with the victims of similar recent crimes against women.

"Enough is enough! Violence against women and children is a global pandemic and we will not stand aside watching it taking place!," the Facebook page states.

"There is nothing [being] done to protect us! Daily, women and children continue to be attacked, violated in many different ways, in our homes, our streets, our places of education, even in our nature. We are haunted by fear everywhere we go."
