WATCH: Trump was 'ill-informed' on land expropriation - Ramaphosa in US

25 September, 03:06 PM

President Cyril Ramaphosa said his US counterpart Donald Trump's comments on land expropriation in South Africa were "ill-informed".

Ramaphosa delivered the David Rockefeller memorial lecture at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Monday.

"Well, I regret to say, I think President Trump was ill-informed about what is happening in South Africa. And I think if he had taken the time to get better information from us, he would have been much better informed and his comments would have been better appreciated by South Africans," Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa added that if Trump had been in the audience, he would have told him not to worry about South Africa, because the country would solve its own problems in typical fashion.

"I would have told him: Mr Trump, rest assured. This problem is going to be solved in a typical South African way, because we've been able to solve our problems in the past."

Ramaphosa also said he believed Trump should have gone to more trouble to obtain the correct information before voicing his views on land in South Africa on Twitter.
