We are alive only by the grace of God - Cash-in-transit security officer

12 June, 04:06 PM

Security officers across major cities turned out to protest the killing of colleagues in cash-in-transit heists on Tuesday.

The march was organised by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) and the Motor Transport Workers' Union.

Cash-in-transit robberies escalated in South Africa, with Police Minister Bheki Cele announcing new plans to bring down the well-organised and heavily armed gangs carrying out the heists, which are robbing the country of millions of rands in cash.

One of the cash-in-transit officers, who wanted to remain anonymous out of fear of victimisation, said he was shot in 2006 by 11 armed men.

He and his partner were left to die by the criminals but survived the attack.

He feels the government can help by making sure there is police visibility at the collection and drop-off point routes.

The officers also feel that they are underpaid by the security companies.
