06 December, 09:53 AM

South Africa's grade 5 and grade 9 pupils are among the world's five lowest-performers in mathematics and science when compared with their international counterparts.

This is according to a study by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), which aims to gauge the level and quality of education being offered, as well as a Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) for Grade 5s.

Education researcher Dr. Nic Spaull weighs in, and discusses some of the best and worst performers per province. Watch.
