WATCH: Wits students, security in turbulent hail of stones

20 September, 02:22 PM

Watch as demonstrating Wits students and private security guards face-off outside the university's Great Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Students and security officers pelted one another with stones across the plaza in front of the Great Hall. The guards shielded themselves as shouts, whistles and thuds of landing rock rang out.

The outbreak of violence followed a tense Tuesday morning on and around campus. Police apprehended 31 suspects for blocking traffic. The suspects were released later the same day.

News24's Lerato Sejake captured skirmishes on campus, and witnessed students apprehending a peer for damaging university property.

Later images showed students with their arms in the air. "We surrender," they shouted. The same shielded guards in this video later retreated behind cracked glass doors.

Security guards had earlier used teargas to disperse the gathering of students. Soon before going to print Sejake reported police were in discussions with students in a bid to de-escalate the tension.
