WATCH: Samwu protesters leave trail of destruction

06 May, 03:04 PM

A large gathering of workers from the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) marched through the Cape Town CBD on Wednesday in a legal protest, on the third day of strike action, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Watch.

Law enforcement and police were deployed to the CBD as protesters made their way to the Civic Centre to deliver a memorandum via Tennant Street, Christiaan Barnard Street and Hertzog Boulevard. Just before midday, hundreds of strikers were seen making their way down Adderley Street, up-ending rubbish bins and spreading trash along their route.

Roadwork beacons were also thrown about, while there were reports of cars being damaged by unruly protesters. Meanwhile, stores and vendors around Adderley street lost out on business, closing shop for fear of being looted.
