Approximately 1,000 lions are being shot in canned hunts yearly in SA

25 August, 11:10 AM

Filmmaker Ian Michler joins Jennifer Sanasie in studio. He talks us through the horrific conditions of the canned lion trade in South Africa.

Around 1,000 lions are shot while in captivity in South Africa each year. Hunters pay half the price to shoot a lion that has been bred for canned hunts. Watch Michler tell us about the hunts that cost about $5,400 to kill a lioness to $48,000 for a black maned lion.

While it seems unethical to breed lions for hunting, Michler tells us it's not illegal. Watch him tell us why his research has revealed that there are no conservation links when it comes to captive bred lions.
