Rarin' to Go! New Datsun revealed in SA

  • Datsun returns to South Africa
  • New Go to be launched locally
  • Priced below R100 000

ROSSLYN, South Africa -  In February 2014 Wheels24 reported that Datsun would mark its revival in South Africa with the local launch of the Go hatchback and this week (June 10) it happened.

The Go is a four-door hatchback city car that's 1.6m wide, 1.4m tall and 3.7m long with a 2.4m wheelbase and will have a 1.2 petrol engine pushing power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox while burning around five litres/100km.

Vincent Cobee, global head of Datsun, said: “In creating the Go we designed a brand-new car that has all the benefits of models that are much more expensive. Our car has class-leading performance, economy and handling and is built to requirements, not down to a price… the addition of the many advanced features proves this.”

PERSONALITY TOUCH

It's equipped with a what the brand claims is a unique mobile docking station so users can sync their smartphone with the audio system via a slot in the dash. It also has AUX connectivity.

Datsun SA's general manager, Des Fenner, added: “Research has indicated that each Go buyer places a premium on having a car that reflects their personality so a full range of optional accessories will be available to personalise the car requirements.”

The Go will, er, go on sale in South Africa later in 2014 with the automaker aiming to price its new hatchback at "below R100 000".

What about after-sales service? Datsun said owners would have access to "a network of 30 dealers" across the country - a number it aims to double eventually.
