SPIED: 2013 Toyota Prius

Despite looking like a canvas-skinned aardvark, the model captured by spy photographers is in fact Toyota’s next-generation Prius hybrid. The fourth-generation Prius, spotted in prototype guise, reveals familiar design elements hinting that the exterior is most likely to feature only evolutionary changes.

Under the metal we’re expecting plenty of advancements.

The prototype is probably the most camouflaged model we’ve seen… even the rims have been covered! The new Prius will ride lower than the model it replaces and will have “a sleeker profile” than the current Prius. These the automaker's FT-Bh and NS4 concepts are believed to hint at the design of the new car.

Toyota is planning to increase its production of lithium-ion batteries though its next Prius will still use nickel-hydride packs. The new Prius will sport an updated hybrid system. It’s likely that the automaker will eventually switch to more efficient lithium-ion battery packs.

The fourth-generation Prius will either be launched later in 2013 or early 2014.
