A 12-year-old boy from Texas in the US was arrested after he reportedly fatally shot his 10-year-old brother.

The boy, whose name hasn’t been released, was arrested on murder charges and will reportedly undergo a mental health evaluation, FOX News reports.

The shooting took place on Saturday afternoon at a rural property in Conroe, ABC News reports.

"Based on the investigation conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, a 12-year-old sibling has been charged with murder and is currently in custody in the Montgomery County Juvenile Detention Facility," Lieutenant Scott Spencer of the sheriff's office said in a statement on Sunday.

According to reports, police received a 911 call and arrived at the home around 2.40pm where they found the younger brother with a gunshot wound to the chest, Daily Beast reports.

The boy later died at a local hospital and the incident is still under investigation.

Chief of the juvenile division of the sheriff’s office, Marc Brumberger, noted that the 12-year-old appeared to have developmental issues including psychological problems.

“Right now, it seems it was intentional because he was mad at his brother. So, our focus right now is his background and the family situation,” Brumberger said.

“We always are open to the prospect, especially with a kid this age doing something like this, there is probably a mental health issue.”

He also said that authorities are focusing on giving the boy mental health treatment in a facility.

The boy is expected to appear in court on 16 May.

The parents are said to be “extremely distraught” but haven’t been charged.
