Sydney - Around 123 people have been rescued from an asylum-seeker boat that sank en route to Australia on Wednesday, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said, adding that there were between 123 to 133 on board.

Authorities had earlier said an estimated 150 people were on the vessel.

"As we speak my best advice is that 123 people have been rescued," Gillard told parliament, adding there were between 123-133 people on board.

This comes less than a week after a boat carrying about 200 people sank on its way to Australia last Thursday.

Rescuers managed to save 110 people and 17 bodies have been recovered.
