New Delhi - A Swiss woman who was touring by bicycle with her husband through the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was gang-raped by a group of eight men, police said Saturday.

Thirteen men were detained and questioned in connection with the attack, which occurred on Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer RK Gurjar said.

The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple's mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10 000 rupees ($185).

The woman was in a hospital on Saturday in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said, adding that she and her husband apparently suffered no major injuries.

Police detained 13 men and questioned them in connection with the attack, he said. Six of the men were released after questioning. No other details were immediately available.

Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.

India has seen outrage and widespread protests against rape and attacks on women since December's fatal gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

I don't understand why people from superior countries travel to inferior countries. Switzerland is probably the best country in the world, if not it's certainly in the top 10 with the Scandinavian and far east Asian countries. I don't know why people from Europe and North America insist on traveling to the Caribbeans, India or anywhere in Africa. If you live in a wealthy neighborhood, you wouldn't spend a weekend in the ghetto as a getaway. Why visit trashy countries? Educate yourself on a country before visiting it.

Usually when a certain colour travels to another country, it's to steal their land, resources, and populate it with their own race, and eventually enslave the natives within a system called "legal labour". But since that's outrun its' usefulness, now this this race has nothing to do, so they travel back to the countries that took their freedom back, only to realise that their own past-influence has turned the country into a monstrous rage of savaging lunatics...think Frankenstein's Monster?

zxvbb12 why people from Europe and North America insist on traveling ?? ..Is the most ignorant comment that I ever read on these pages ..Maybe It has to be because the author lives in a inferior country.

What ARE you going to do zxvbb12 when, heaven forbid, people actually travel to Mars? I have vivid memories of the stench of pig manure whilst travelling through the mountainous areas of Europe......oh sorry....your manure does not smell does it now?

The question is not about superiority, its about common sense relating to the world we live in today. This can happen in any country under that conditions

I am very sad to read the incident. It is a numbers game coupled with risk and reward. Most emerming countrys have a large diversity of people-good and bad.good enforcement minimise terrible practises.

Crime like theft, rape and murder can happen in any country, whether 1st world country like Europe or USA or a 3rd world country. Criminal predators are everywhere in the world. Tourists are especially vunerable because they travel into unsafe areas where locals fear to tread - considered no-go areas by law enforcement officials. However, the victims can take comfort from the fact that in 3rd world countries where the crime causes national and international embarrasment for the government like a tourist raped or killed, those criminals brought to book will get "special attention" from the law-enforcement establishment and even fellow in-mates in prison and they can forget about about "human rights" and "rehabilition" enjoyed in 1st world prison systems, not that the 3rd world prisons are shangri-las in their own right - spend some time there and you will understand the cliche "hell on earth".
