San Juan - An SUV has been stopped in Puerto Rico with a load of cocaine valued by federal agents at $16m.

A spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement says local police ordered the driver of the Ford Expedition to pull over near the central Puerto Rican town of Caguas for a traffic violation.

Ivan Ortiz says the driver complied, and then took off running into the woods.

The officers soon figured out why: Inside the SUV, they found 700kg of cocaine.

Ortiz said on Friday that the driver was never caught and no arrests have been made.

Authorities don't know the source or the destination of the drugs, but the US island territory has become a major transhipment point for South American cocaine bound for the mainland.
