Islamabad - At least 19 Islamist rebels and seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in combat near the Afghan border, the military said Monday, in the deadliest incident for the army in months.

Troops surrounded a group of Taliban fighters in North Waziristan tribal district in an overnight raid, the military said.

One of the rebels exploded his suicide vest, killing the seven soldiers, the military said.

The military launched an offensive in North Waziristan against Islamist militants linked to al-Qaeda from mid-June 2014.

Officials said about 2 000 rebels had been killed over the past year, but those figures are difficult to verify independently because the area is off-limits to journalists.
