2 tourists raped at gunpoint in Australia

2012-05-03 08:02

Sydney - A man was arrested on Thursday after two European tourists were allegedly raped at gunpoint as they slept in their car in the Australian desert town of Alice Springs.

Police said the women, whose nationalities were not released, were sleeping in their parked vehicle on Wednesday morning when they were attacked.

Commander Michael Murphy said the men allegedly forced the women to have sex with them.

"One of the males was armed with what has been described as a rifle. Money and tobacco was also stolen from the victims," Murphy said.

The men fled in another car and a 17-year-old was subsequently arrested.

Northern Territory Tourism Minister Malarndirri McCarthy said the incident was shocking but expressed hope it would not put off tourists.

"It is absolutely horrific for any woman to be attacked in such a way anywhere in the world, in particular here in the Northern Territory," she told ABC radio.

"We want people to feel safe here... irrespective of whether they are visitors or whether they live here."

      Rob - 2012-05-03 09:26

Why do black commentators on these forums appear so pleased to read of attrocities in OTHER countries. It almost sounds as if they suffer from a guilt complex and are relieved to read that this type of thing happens worldwide albeit on a far smaller scale then in South Africa.

      Shanelle - 2012-05-03 09:46

Because Rob, most (not all but most) white commentators on these forums say "only in Africa" and you wrong about about being pleased that someone gets hurt. No matter where it is in the world it is a terrible thing to happen.

      Lerato - 2012-05-03 09:50

@Janti, Australian rape cases are lower than SA's but there is no point lying about it, how can you say only 2! Infact it is 15 630, there is no point in letting emotions take charge when we can be factual, go to

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-03 11:54

@Lerato, thank you for putting old Ismail in place... Yes people, crime in Australia is spiralling upwards. It may be less then in SA but it is climbing.. Especially violent contact crime like rape and, yes, home invasions!!

      Gary - 2012-05-03 12:28

Well instead of everyone arguing, why doesn't someone get some facts. Lets compare the official crime rates in Aus and South Africa instead of jumping on 1 crime to try make a point. Maybe crime is increasing in Aus.. I love to know how many years it will take to reach South Africas levels. Oops .. maybe i jumped the gun, perhaps there are still those on here who think ours is less that Aus.

  • bnnyoni - 2012-05-03 08:32

Copycats Aussies this is SA game.

  • Shane - 2012-05-03 08:36

There were probably a thousand rapes in SA yesterday, why are you not reporting on them???

      sabongam - 2012-05-03 11:43

@ Rob - because it seems like some white commentators are pleased when atrocities happen in SA just like you...But its so amazing how atrocities are defended when they happen in places like Australia. Then its justified by comparing the frequency of those atrocities in the so-called "safer" countries - like how its happening right here. Hey,tell you what, instead of trashing SA all the time, honestly, why don't you just move there permanently, seriously, why don't you just do that??????? @ Shane - same applies to you. Why would you want to live in a country that is a "Banana republic", hell hole, etc.,etc...A country you're clearly not happy living in, it seems? And then we'll see you returning after 18-months, coming back like most of those that had previously emigrated. This as reality hits home after it turns out that the grass is not so greener in places like Australia, New-Zealand, Ireland and the England...

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-03 11:55

@sabongam, because people like Shane are just miserable and would love to leave but they cannot because they not educated enough.

      Shane - 2012-05-03 13:05

Nobody is pleased, stop being STUPID!!!! Should we spell it out for you? What we are trying to say....... wait for this..... Is that SA should be more concerned with the high levels of crime in its own country and stop trying to flag that it happens elsewhere (so therefore its OK)..

      Gary - 2012-05-03 13:21

Shane, my adivce is give up; there are none so blind as those who will not see!

  • Daniel - 2012-05-03 08:58

@least they want to make their people feel safe! These ministers and public safety puppets in this country only care about stats and money! Public safety went out the door yeeeeeeeeeeears ago!

  • Sapepa - 2012-05-03 09:02

I just knew people would try divert this tragedy and make it about S.A. Is it sooo hard for people to believe that rapes DONT only occur in S.A?? Now let’s see them perform mental acrobatics and try make this about the ANC and Malema. Lol u gotta be kidding me!

      Sean - 2012-05-03 10:23

      Hahahahahahaha, you are right

      Mendy - 2012-05-03 12:18

      Pixie86 - 2012-05-03 22:23

i'm so glad i'm not the only one who noticed this growing trend

  • Lerato - 2012-05-03 09:40

In as much as we like to portray SA as hell on earth the truth is no country is immune to crime, it’s just that most South Africans are just so negative that they bad mouth their country at any available opportunity. I remember the President of FIfa complaining about the same issue before the world cup saying that he won’t be shocked if negative reports are being churned by BBC or other foreign media, he was shocked that most of the negativity was coming from the local media with Etv going an extra mile interviewing a “would-be murderer”. You can never see such things in the US, because they love their country. Anyway just check crime statistics on this link, see which countries are leading (reported crime)

      Sean - 2012-05-03 10:35

Lerato, the only people who say these negativities about this country are the non- Africans who wish to take this country back into their hands and start the oppression they once were very comfortable with.

      Gary - 2012-05-03 13:11

Lerato as u mention "reported crime", but it really is disingenious to look at total crime stats (how about the per capita values). So lets compare a few more important crime types, not including petty stuff we don't consider a crime in this country!: Homicides > Firearm homicide rate > per 100,000 pop: SA 74.5748 (1st) AUS 0.3073 (26th) - SA 242 times higher. Homicides > Overall homicide rate > per 100,000 pop: SA 125.965 (1st) AUS 1.8802 (27th) - SA 66 times higher. Murders per 100,000: SA 69 (1st) AUS 1.5 (108th) - SA ?? times higher (you work it out). Should we look at more? Fraud? Assault? Rape? Pick a category!

  • Shane - 2012-05-03 09:44

@ Mohau....Yes, but your chances are MUCH MUCH greater in SA!!!!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-03 11:56

Carry on defending the rape in Aus..

      sabongam - 2012-05-03 11:59

To every action there is a re-action...Ok, let's be honest most crimes are reportedly comitted by blacks. One just has to look at the stats of in prisons. What kind of people did you think you would get after abusing them and putting them through hell for almost 50-years of apartheid rule?Do you think if you had to lock a child up and abuse him/her that child would come out normal? Face the ramifications for what the apartheid govt. has done. This is the animal it has bred and 18-years will not simply erase it in a flash.Fact is not all blacks will act the same just like other people do not react the same way to certain situations.Chew and digest on that Shane.

  • thurlo.cicero - 2012-05-03 10:06

Considering how South Africans are running away to find greener pastures in Australia - i wouldnt be surprised if these are Safricans making a name for themselves. Only the lighter version of Africans ;)

What did you smoke 'little troll'?you' hav drank a lot last night..go spil that gabbage of yours at your neighbour satan.

  • phosa.peter2 - 2012-05-03 10:17

Why??only whites bad mouth s.a as if crime happens in s.a alone..we'hav proved to the world in 2010 that 'this is the safest place you can invest within,' just the tabloid of s.a under the imperialist taint our image, bcos they dont want to accept a democratic gov. that rule the country presently.

      mholthuysen - 2012-05-03 10:34

Aham - 1st - we are THE rape capital of the world, where someone is raped every 36 seconds - including babies! That surely shows the world that we are the safest place to be in. And that is not an imperialists view that is the fact as issued by the United Nations Office on Crimes and Drugs. And you made another point - "democratic" government that RULE... a democratic government SERVES - something people in this country do not seem to understand. There is nothing to bad mouth - as facts and reality speak for themselves - or sadly in some cases can't anymore as they are raped, murdered and mutilated.

  • seymore.butt - 2012-05-03 10:28

Looks like too many south africans have immigrated to OZ...

  • Caleb - 2012-05-03 10:37

Wow, in Australia too? I wish we could get as defensive about South Africa as we do about other countries when we comment.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-03 11:57

  • Hallo - 2012-05-03 11:07

Makes no difference if you have a 1 in 100 chance of getting raped or a 1 in 10 chance for example. Expats don't get so defensive.

  • Bronwyn - 2012-05-03 11:50

Rape is wrong in every sence! However , please tell me how many Australian rape thir babies? You cannot even compare the two countires, so DON'T!

      Pixie86 - 2012-05-03 22:14

i suppose you have a daily news account of every crime in australia. Gang rapes and all rapes in general occur all over the world. You can't expect the SA media to cover all those international incidents, but they happen.

  • bhekie2k - 2012-05-03 12:25

I wonder when black people will stop blaming the aparthied for sick actions like rape, murder and robberies. we didn't go to school so this is the end product. Please! Half of Africa went through racial segregation but you don't see these levels of crime. Look at countries like Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia, Mozambique, Angola, Zambia. there is nothing special about you south africa. Stop with excuses

      Nigel - 2012-05-03 13:01

well said bhekie, rape in SA is out of control, & it cannot be blamed on poverty or even Aparheid, unfortunately family values, common decency & respect have eroded to a level where some people behave like wild animals, it doesn't matter who or what, rape, murder & robbery is not acceptable & those quilty of the crimes should be severely punished.

      sabongam - 2012-05-03 13:18

Well, bhekie how many African countries went through apratheid. Please name the African countries that went through racial segregation like SA? And please be very careful and research your answer before your reply.Or uzama ukuzenza ngcono kubelungu at the price of your people. Bear in mind I'm not defending rapists or killers or the crime that is being committed here. But if you don't defend your own what do you expect others to do?

      Malavi - 2012-05-03 16:50

Well said Sabongam... I think he is going for tumbs up. Is these kinds that love to be seen as thinkers in the expense of his own people, what a fool!

      Pixie86 - 2012-05-03 22:12

i don't know what the heck you're rambling about! This has nothing to do with south africa! Eish, epic fail.

  • alvin.botes - 2012-05-03 12:30

I am happy that the international press has started to unravel these types of crimes, which unfortunately happens every in the world. The only good thing about the South African press, unlike their Australian peers, reports frequenty on violent crimes affecting women, on a daily basis. RAPE is the most devious and horrible crimes which canbe committed, and I hope that all governments should as a minimum sentence has LIFE IN PRISON, without the option of Parole.

  • Malavi - 2012-05-03 16:56

I suspect are the boers who are running there.

  • Philemon - 2012-05-03 21:26

Really this happened in Australia, Australlians should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Pixie86 - 2012-05-03 22:34

honestly i'm embarrassed to call some of you my fellow south africans. In fact, most of you should have your citizenship stripped. The constant nay-saying and the constant complaining is so annoying! You don't know how good you have it in SA. Look at countries like afganistan, syria, iraq and the likes where on a daily basis dead bodies are laying on the streets. Look at countries like uganda and rwanda where children long lost their innocence because of the civil wars. Here, we're free to make our choices. We are affected by crime, certainly, but can you compare the horrendous things people in these countries i mentioned deal with every day. We have freedom of speech, of association of movement! Yet we keep pecking and picking and focus on the bad. If SA is not good enough for you. Go! Some of us believe that some day this country will become the promised land, but for that to happen we all need to work together for it!

  • bashin.monyela - 2012-05-04 08:12

You people are pathetic, if you hate SA that much then leave, you are suffering from too much exposure to negetivity and thats why you can't see anything good about our country and the fact that you feel you have to involve us in another countrys issues, is just low and petty.
