20 hurt in mass stabbing at US high school

2014-04-09 16:21

New York - An American high school student stabbed or slashed 20 people, mostly teenagers, in a bloody 30-minute rampage in the classrooms and hallways of a Pittsburg high school on Wednesday, officials said.

Several had life threatening injuries, Chris Kaufmann, the trauma medical director at Forbes Regional Hospital, told CNN.

The attack at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, a suburb of Pittsburg, began at 07:13 (12:13 GMT) as students began arriving for what should have been a routine day.

The assault was over by 07:45 with the suspect taken into custody almost immediately, Dan Stevens, a spokesperson for Westmoreland County emergency management, told AFP.

Stevens identified the suspect as a male student.

Stevens said he was cornered by police officers who rushed to the scene. His age and identity were not immediately released.

"Twenty students were injured, four of those students were flown from the scene," Stevens told AFP.

The victims, most of them aged 14 to 17, were slashed and stabbed in "numerous classrooms and hallways" of the high school, Stevens added.

The school has since been evacuated.

‘Critical incident’

A statement on the website of the Franklin Regional School District said a "critical incident" had occurred.

"All elementary schools are cancelled, the middle school and high school students are secure," the statement said.

Victims had been stabbed in the torso, Kaufmann said.

"These are quite serious injuries," he told CNN.

"We had two patients who went immediately to the operating room," Kaufmann said.

While most were students at the high school, an adult also was among those being treated at the hospital.

Wednesday's attack comes after a long and frequent line of US school shootings that have inflamed a nationwide debate over gun control in the United States.

But even the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 young children and six adults were shot dead, ultimately failed to tighten gun ownership rules.

A terrible thing to happen, let's hope everyone makes a speedy recovery. I doubt if anyone will be calling for knife control though.

Agreed, while we certainly have plenty of our own problems, and we have had some sad incidents happening to individual children within the school environment. I don't think we come close to the sickness displayed almost monthly within the States! In SA you have a problem with someone, you take it out on them. In the states, you take it out on as many school kids as you can get your hands on. I have family with small kids living in the states and I seriously wonder how nervous they must be whenever they think about school!

People need self defence, Systema is a great knife disarming defence. Need to go back to basics on this one, it's man's primal instinct, not violence or aggression but defence. We need to toughen up the next generation. Old school.

It's shockingly sad that society has reached a point where we have to official teach our CHILDREN self defense. No, I'm sorry, that is not the final answer. Root out the real problems plaguing societies and then our kids won't have to live a life of fear further instilled by the need to learn how to defend themselves against violence that should never be leveled against them in the first place.

      Jane Mead - 2015-03-09 17:25

I agree Leigh-Rose. Self defence is a sad option. We need to find harmony in the world and as you rightfully say, root out the rot. We may need to up the game of those who should be protecting law-abiding people and children.
