Mariposa - Thieves made off with an estimated $2m in precious gems and gold during a brazen daytime robbery of a California museum.

The state Highway Patrol says the robbers were armed with pickaxes and threatened workers during Friday's heist at the California Mining and Minerals Museum. No suspects have been identified.

The museum is home to the Fricot Nugget, a nearly 6.3kg crystalline gold mass.

Investigators would not say what items were taken but confirmed that the nugget was not taken.
