London - A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Indonesia, off the island of Sulawesi, the US Geological Survey said.

It struck at a depth of 102km, 90km south of Gorontalo, at 01:32 on Saturday (17:32 GMT on Friday). There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

Also on Friday, a smaller 4.8 magnitude tremor struck off the east coast of Japan at a depth of 17.2km.

The area is on the Ring of Fire where movements in the Earth's crust causes earthquakes as pressure is released from tectonic plates.
