Alligator found guarding dagga stash

Castro Valley - Authorities in California say an alligator named "Mr Teeth" that was apparently protecting a stash of dagga has been taken to a zoo.

When Alameda County Sheriff's investigators entered 32-year-old Assif Mayar's home on Wednesday for a probation check, they found not only 15kg of dagga valued at an estimated $100 000 but also the 1.5m alligator inside a tank in a bedroom.

Sergeant  J D Nelson says "Mr Teeth" was likely used to deter dagga thieves.

Mayar told investigators he got the alligator to commemorate rapper Tupac Shakur's 1996 death.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing dagga for sale.

Officials say Mr Teeth is very sick and is being treated at the Oakland Zoo.
