Americans mark low key 9/11 anniversary

2012-09-11 07:31

New York - Americans mark the 11th anniversary of the attacks on 11 September 2001 on Tuesday with relatively low key ceremonies that reflect a gradual dampening of passions around the emotional day.

The main ceremony will be the ritual reading at New York's Ground Zero of the names of the 2 983 people killed both on 9/11 and in the precursor to those attacks, the 1993 car bombing of the World Trade Centre.

Relatives of the dead will take turns to read the names against a backdrop of mournful music.

They will pause for moments of silence marking the moment when four aircraft hijacked by al-Qaeda turned into fireballs - two smashing into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon and one crashing into a Pennsylvania field.

Another two moments of silence will be observed at the times the two towers collapsed, accounting for the vast majority of 9/11's victims.

However, this year New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other politicians will not take the podium at Ground Zero, in contrast with last year's 10th anniversary, when President Barack Obama led a long list of VIP guests.

No suspension of campaign

Obama and his wife Michelle will observe the anniversary with a moment of silence outside the White House, then visit the Pentagon memorial.

Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, will travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United flight 93 crashed after passengers attacked the hijackers and thwarted a worse disaster had it continued to its target.

The White House said Obama had been briefed by "key national security principals on... preparedness and security posture" for the anniversary.

But in keeping with the lower key atmosphere this year, there will apparently be no official suspension of the bitter presidential campaign.

Former president Bill Clinton will be campaigning for Obama and speaking out against Republican Mitt Romney at an event in Miami.

The passage of time appears to have cooled public attention to 11 September, particularly after the huge media coverage of the 10th anniversary, which many saw as a suitable moment for allowing commemorations to peak.

Seal book

The killing by American troops of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in May 2011 has helped draw a line under 9/11, as has the opening of the Ground Zero memorial, which opened for last year's ceremonies.

A skyscraper at One World Trade Centre is near completion and is again the tallest building in New York, as were the Twin Towers before they fell down.

This year sees the publishing on Tuesday of a book by a former US Navy Seal who was among the troops that shot dead bin Laden in his Pakistani hideout.

The book describes in gory detail how the special forces killed the fugitive, then radioed back the news, saying it was "for God and country".

The Pentagon has threatened legal action against the author who uses the penname Mark Owen, but has been outed by the US media as Matt Bissonnette.

Last week, Obama said in a radio address that the United States is "stronger, safer and more respected in the world" since 9/11.

But his Republican opponent has accused Obama of weak leadership during the Arab Spring turmoil and of failing to be tough enough on Iran's government.

In Afghanistan, which once hosted bin Laden, US troops continue to struggle to overcome the Taliban guerrilla army.

Most foreign troops are scheduled to withdraw by the end of 2014, handing over responsibility for combat to Western-backed Afghan government forces.

+/- 600k innocent people died in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of this. We should remember them along with the +3k innocent Americans who died on this day

      gerhard.debruijn - 2012-09-11 09:21

Andrea. They harboured Bin Laden. He planned and executed an unprovoked attack against the innocent public of the USA. They should have given up Bin Laden, but because he shared their faith and used that to justify the killings, they did not. The USA should have killed 6 000 000 of them and that would have been a good start.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-09-11 09:31

Ahhh, that six million figure. Killing a lot of people must make up many of your dreams? Another genocidal maniac!

Gerhard I suggest you read the front page article of this mornings the New York times.

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-11 10:31

Where is the evidence that bin laden did it? He certainly never admitted it. The taliban even offered to hand him over if the americans could produce even a stitch of evidence. And did they?

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-11 11:07

@Gerhard... - apologies your name is too long... tell me... are you the AWB member With brains or WITHOUT de brains... and you eat with that same mouth... no wonder their is so much hatred in our land...

      Havokreeka - 2012-09-11 11:18

Gerhard, if you honestly believe Bin Laden wasn't assisted by government agencies you're living with your head in the sand. 9/11 was just an excuse for the US to invade for oil and building contracts.

      kyle.berry.90857 - 2012-09-11 15:25

Gerhard, I dnt have time to waste on idiots like yourself, so I'm gonna make this short and sweet... Ur the problem with the world!!

Will never happen to a good 'old christian. How can a christian president of a christian nation ever murder thousands of muslims?

America's own "Two minute Hate", ala Orwell's 1984, a daily, 2-minute show beginning at 11:00 AM where a purported image of Goldstein is shown on the telescreen (a one-channel television with internal surveillance devices that cannot be turned off). Ostensibly, Goldstein also serves an important role as both a convenient scapegoat for the totalitarian regime in 1984, and justifying reason for more military buildup, surveillance and elimination of civil liberties. George Orwell was on the money!

Seems it's not only in North Korea that there are brainwashed people happy to advertise their own ignorance by parroting the standard party line and fearful to engage with anything beyond their own narrowly-defined world.

WTC and the conspiracy nuts emerge from their truther warrens, if you think this was a inside job then you should be treated in the same manner as the likes of David Icke.

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-11 10:28

Anyone who believes that a plane brought all three trade center buildings down is a complete and utter fool. If u have even a slight understanding of steal and still believe that jet fuel could melt structual steal u are even more of a fool.

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-11 10:32

      2 planes sorry

      klipkop.degroote - 2012-09-11 10:46

Yes Brendon and not to mention the pentagon plane that did not exist. A bomb/missile took out the pentagon! The plane that supposedly flew into it completely disintegrated, seats passengers and all.. how is that possible? Plus look at the impossible flight path it took that lead to the pentagon, completely impossible as all the telephone poles and stuff outside in the flight path was not taken down and are still standing today.. inside job! to go to war for oil!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-09-11 10:55

@Ninja If powerful people are capable of meeting somewhere and plan to do good things, why is it incomprehensible that they could meet to do bad things (which is the "defenition" of a conspiracy). People lie and so do governments!

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 11:16

In an article in the Journal of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society and in subsequent interviews, Thomas Eagar, an engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explains why: steel loses 50 percent of its strength at 1,200 degrees F; 90,000 liters of jet fuel ignited other combustible materials such as rugs, curtains, furniture and paper, which continued burning after the jet fuel was exhausted, raising temperatures above 1,400 degrees F and spreading the inferno throughout each building. Temperature differentials of hundreds of degrees across single steel horizontal trusses caused them to sag--straining and then breaking the angle clips that held the beams to the vertical columns. Once one truss failed, others followed. When one floor collapsed onto the next floor below, that floor subsequently gave way, creating a pancaking effect that triggered each 500,000-ton structure to crumble. Professor at MIT writing in a scietific journal - real fool.

      Havokreeka - 2012-09-11 11:20

"Conspiracy Theory" A term used by government propaganda to discredit rational concerns...

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-09-11 11:28

You can find hundreds of other reputable professors who could refute that same theory if you were a sceptic, but you and I know that you are not, but a denialist.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 12:26

Every single 9/11 conspiracy point has been debunked from the steel columns to the tower 7 . I can list further reputable sources like Der Spiegel , Scietific American and Popular mechanics for futher reading. Once again , having an outcome first 'America attacked itself' and then relying on falsified evidence to attempt to prove that theory. Even if the melting steel was this loose piece of evidence , to insert America attacked itself holds as much water as inserting aliens did it . @Klipkop -Look at the wreckage photo's of the pentagon its clearly a plane as well as what fire damage does to a aluminum plane. @Fidel - conspiracies in powerful circles do happen i never said it didn't , the final solution is a good example but its not a go to response especially when far more convincing body of evidence is avaible to the contrary.(occums razor)

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-11 12:54

Ninja. There is no logical explanation for the collapse of the towers. Even if the steel did fail, buildings that loose the stability at the top will collapse from the top not implode from the base.

      john.collin.1690 - 2012-09-11 13:41

Ninja you give reference to one professor? here's an hour long video from experts in the engineering, demolition and building industry explaining how its impossible for those two towers to implode in on itself and fall at free-fall speed from a plane crash. most of the jet fuel vaporized in the first explosion. not to mention building 7 that only had fires on two floors that had already burnt out. building 7 collapsed in on itself at free-fall speed 5 hours after the crash. not to mention all the evidence was sealed off and transported to china to be destroyed, so no proper analysis was done. plus weeks after the buildings came down there was still evidence of flowing melted steel which is proven not to happen from burning jet fuel. controlled demolition exports use a combination of chemicals that when mixed together, literally melts steel in seconds at 4000 degrees. you cant be that stupid to completely deny that things don't add up which leads me to believe you have ulterior motives in trying to convince people it was Muslims in caves that brought down NORAD??? i dare you to watch this video that only deals with the facts from engineering experts and tell me they are all wrong.

allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 13:42 No offence but i'll take engineers report from northwestern with more authority.

      john.collin.1690 - 2012-09-11 14:06

      like i said, ulterior motives.

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-09-11 14:24

What a joke, the brainwashed arguing about the extent of the others brainwashing.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 15:19

@John Collins - The mainstream scientific and engineering community has generally rejected the position taken by the group, Architects and Engineers for 9/11 . So yes , they are wrong and have brought nothing that has been found to warrant any further investigation.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 15:22

Why use a plane at all . Why crash your own airline industry and every other countries { Swissair etc}, damage your financial markets { just when you are going to need some war funds} destroy very very valuable property, panic the WORLD, kill your own citizens etc. Could all this not be achieved by a ‘foiled’ plot. Terrorists were 15 minutes from the murder of thousands… a president would certainly come out better having stopped an attack than permitted one. Or if you needed a big attack why not just the anthrax that came after. Everyone panicking over any white powder. Far far easier to plant Anthrax or similar in the towers or Disneyland, have a panic, then capture your suspects who blow themselves up or whatever you want. If you were going to do this, would you do it this way?’ There are cheaper, better, easier and safer ways to get into a war.. Also why pick Osama as the fall guy if the target is Hussein. Why not just pick Saddam and ‘plant’ evidence to show it was him all along, thereby never needing to go to Afghanistan at all .After all if you can plan the attack why not the culprit.. no need to go scratching for evidence of a link to Iraq AFTER the attack , set it up before. Funny how the authorities are both all powerful, all seeing, all knowing, and completely incompetent at the same time...

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 15:22

The good old Pearl Harbor theory always struck me the same way . Why destroy your fleet just as you are planning war. Discover the jap carriers 500 miles out while on manouevers’ and the impact on public opinion would be similar to a attack. Why sink your whole fleet ? Especially if you could sink theirs .. take a few years off the war if they lost 6 carriers day 1 !!

      john.collin.1690 - 2012-09-11 15:58

Ninja you are an idiot... they did it that way because the American people need to be kept in control.. of course there are other ways to go to war, but bringing down two huge buildings in such a terrifying and graphic way, brings the sheeple together and in the end demanding to go to war instead of it being forced on them.. theres's no point arguing.. you are incapable of seeing logic or you are one of Bushes little NSA cronnies paid to sway public opinion in public blogs and forums... lame

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-11 16:37

John - lol ,sure you got me buddy, i'm a NSA agent! Keep up the good work you and your very 'special' friends are doing .

      Fidel - 2012-09-11 19:23

@John Ninja is one of the few reasoned and articulative posters on this site. If you disagree with him say so and why. No need to make jorkey references about him being an idiot. Name calling is silly! "If your logic is strong enough to stand on its own right, there should be no need to attack the character of the opponent. To the undecided audience, attacking him personally is likely to grant him the appearance of a victim." -Oberststuhlherr

@Brendon.nel.7 Evidence of Osama Bin Laden admitting to planning 9/11:,2933,137095,00.html Have you heard of Google before? It's quite useful.

      john.collin.1690 - 2012-09-11 14:01

nick then do yourself a favor and learn how to use google.. its already well known that Bin Laden was trained by the CIA and many US intelligence officials have admitted Bin laden had nothing to do with 9/11. of course he is going to claim responsibility, it makes him look all powerful to his brethren. wow you are stupid and naive about how politics work in this world, go back to watching E entertainment..

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-09-11 16:35

nick, have you heard of gullible it is quite common...

      nick.krige - 2012-09-11 16:55

So I'm gullible for something with evidence behind it (including a video of Bin Laden himself admitting it) and you are the all-knowing ones because you have evidence from websites called "The conspiracy zone"? I think I'll keep my head in the sand, if that is what it is to be enlightened.

      jonny.g.gonzalez - 2012-09-11 17:15

Building 7 wasn't even hit by a plane, and yet it collapsed in the same fashion as a controlled demolition. Thermite. The owner not going to his usual breakfast on the top floor. George W. Bush reading 'My Pet Goat' to schoolkids at the time, clearly a reference to the heavily bearded Osama.

      Fidel - 2012-09-11 19:26

@Nick "We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of darkness; but it is a real tragedy of life for men is afraid of light." I wonder whether you can fathom this old saying. In the meantime do carry on burying your head in the sand if that make you happy.
