Americans' support for Afghan war drops

Washington - Support for the war in Afghanistan has dropped sharply among Americans in recent months as they grow increasingly disillusioned with the conflict that began more than a decade ago, according to a New York Times/CBS News public opinion poll released on Monday.

Two-thirds of those polled – 69% - said the United States should no longer be fighting in Afghanistan, up from 53% in November and the highest percentage since the New York Times/CBS News poll started asking that question in 2009, CBS reported.

Sixty-eight percent said the fighting was going "somewhat badly" or "very badly", compared with 42% who voiced those views in November 2011, the New York Times reported.

The Times/CBS News survey results are in line with other recent polls that show a drop in support for the war.

The survey comes after the massacre of 17 Afghan civilians in which a US soldier has been charged, violence set off by the burning of Qur'ans by American troops last month and a number of killings of US troops by Afghan security forces.

Security responsibility

According to the poll, negative impressions of the war have increased among both Democrats and Republicans.

Sixty percent of Republicans said the war was going somewhat or very badly, compared with 40% in November. Among Democrats, 68% said the war was going somewhat or very badly, compared with 38% in November.

Nato plans to hand over security responsibilities to Afghan forces by the end of 2014. Forty-four percent of respondents said the United States should withdraw sooner than the planned transition; 33% said the Obama administration should stick to the current timetable; and 3% said it should withdraw now.

Seventeen percent said the United States should stay as long as it would take to stabilise the situation.

The poll of 996 adults was conducted by telephone from March 21 to 25, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The problem with the American public visa vi war, they seem to be under the impression that it is a Hollywood movie and all the dead will get up and walk away. They have been so brainwashed as to be like cabbages, as long as Disney land carries on and Mcdonalds keeps going all is well.

The problem with you, Fidel, is that you can ONLY spew out HATRED. For the rest you got NOTHING to offer, besides long BS stories !!!!!

Just try to dispute any of my post with some kind of arguments and not with insults ...Or you like to psychoanalyze me some more? My comments, made on the strength of the above article still obtain. Got to keep chipping away at this self-appointed, self-righteous 'police-force of the world'!

I have read your arguments regarding Geo-politics on many articles! They are close minded and repetitive in their lack of facts! You seem happy with the deluded scenario you have been brought up under to define western powers, any new facts that crop up to disprove your perspective merely becomes an inconvinience that has to be ignored. Refute my points if you can with your own facts and\or logic, that is the essence of intelligent debate. Don't try to distract me with these attacks on my personality if it does not pertain directly to what I write. Anyways, forget what I claim to know, just concentrate on what I show you I know and refute that if you can. It appears you are a poster long on opinions but short on relevant facts. I bow to no-one in my dislike of American and western imperialism! Stupid parrots like you need education indeed. I have read somewhere that, in neural operations, the brain is apt to recognise well known patterns and ignore or distort new inputs to try and make them fit old patterns.

I am sorry to say Fidel, but there is definatelly something wrong with you !!!!! But, listen , you continue what you enjoy doing; To non stop discredit the West at EVERY SINGLE oportunity, and continue praising your heroes; Putin, Chavez, Mugabe, Assad, gaddafi, Ahmadinejad Kim Jong-un Everyone of these countries, except the one with that lunatic Chavez, have no press freedom, freedom of speech, quite frankly, FREEDOM OF NOTHING. I find it quite sickening that someone can abuse their own freedom to deny same to others !!!!!!!!!!!

If there is a point in my comment above that you want to criticise then go ahead but don't go building a big old straw-man to beat on. Your comment is almost heroic in its crass ignorance.
