Annan appalled by new Syria 'massacre'

2012-07-13 22:34

Geneva - Peace envoy Kofi Annan said on Friday he was "shocked and appalled" at reports that tanks and helicopters slaughtered more than 150 people during a massacre in a Syria village.

"I condemn these atrocities in the strongest possible terms," he said in a statement.

"I am shocked and appalled by news coming out of the village of Treimsa, near Hama, of intense fighting, significant casualties, and the confirmed use of heavy weaponry such as artillery, tanks and helicopters," said Annan.

The joint UN-Arab League mediator said that it was "desperately urgent that this violence and brutality stops".

It was "more important than ever that governments with influence exert it more effectively to ensure that the violence ends immediately", he added.

The latest incident "is in violation of the [Syrian] government's undertaking to cease the use of heavy weapons in population centres and its commitment to the six-point plan" said Annan.

UN observers were "ready to go in and seek verification of the facts, if and when circumstances permit", he added.

Annan is just back from talks in Damascus, Tehran and Baghdad. His comments come ahead of a meeting next Monday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

mr annan, i hope you are equally appauled by the involvement of foreign state sanctioned acts to destablise and derail a possible negotiated settlement in syria. I mean how are we to believe that the syrian miltary and gov, with the whole world watching, would do something to discredit themselves so badly!!!

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-13 23:40

      believe it !

i and should, because you say so?

      imtiaz.osman.5 - 2012-07-14 03:23

They are NATO and arab league sponsored mercenaries causing the bloodshed in syria not allowing a peaceful transition. When two people are fighting u can't expect the one to put his hands down while the other is continuing to throw punches. The syrian government tried annans plan but the\r\nOpposition continued to attack. What about the car bomb at the syrian capitol. The syrian army is killing rebels not the people. I do not support assads regime but I believe the bloodshed in syria is caused by the west and arab league.

All the useless UN can do is open their mouth's. Its time for action China.

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-13 23:41

Its only because the UN is hamstrung by China and Russia's veto of any resolution with teeth

      rude.awakning - 2012-07-14 00:43

or is it possible that they are still busy trying to concoct some ''credible'' reason to do so?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 05:33

The real problem is the leadership void in the US and freer world. Putin would back down and China would do nothing if they were forced to make a decision. They have far more to loose in supporting an unelected blood-thirsty dictator.

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-14 13:01

Russia is afraid of losing its military base in Syria which Assad gave them if Assad gets deposed. Russia also has a lot of commercial interests in Syria that Assad is protecting

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:26

The longer Russia supports Assad, the more likely it'll lose it's based in Syria. It's virtually certain it'll lose them now.

      Walter - 2012-07-14 07:08

Typical African politicians you might say. Look at the benign performance of the AU and African states in the Libyan affair. Trouble with the US at the moment is they don't have a George Bush to sort the tyrants out and NATO had too much criticism the last time they interfered.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:29

He has little power. He represents the UN. As long as the Security Council is divided, the UN and Annan have no power.

  • simphiwe.tladi - 2012-07-13 23:54

how long will the UN wait 2 give NATO a go-ahead like they did in Ivory Coast and Lybia?,forever?...well i see now that they were fast 2 take decisions of invading Lybia and Ivory Coast because they are African countries.God bless them...*hurting*

      rude.awakning - 2012-07-14 00:58

they cant risk another iraq situation with all their ''valid and credible'' intel turning out to be fabricated leaving a lot of nato allies red faced after the fact! The veto is from nato allies asking for concrete proof! Oh ''unverified' or ''alleged''' media reports dont count as concrete proof! We know that some of the ''reported'' incident in syria are actually footings from either staged scenarios or from archived footings taken in afghanistan, lebanon, iraq, lybia and palestine!

      Michael - 2012-07-14 06:50

Too right Steven, Annan's head spends so much time up there he's equally shocked when he extricates and finds the world has moved another evolutionary jump.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:30

He can do little for as long as the UN Security Council is divided, and the freer world does nothing on its own to stop Assad.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-07-14 05:51

Annan knows very that NATO/ the Americans will never do anything, since they have nothing to gain, we all know that one of them would have taken unilateral actions, talk is cheap, they can't even talk why they can't get involved. Undecided who to take side with. That for me is Israel/ Palestine coming home to rooast.

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-14 13:05

There are many problems with taking unilateral action against Assad ! by the way, your post is written terribly

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:32

Peter, again, you only have authority to speak for yourself. An aggrandized Ego assumes it speaks for everyone.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:51

Moreover, I recommend informing yourself more fully about the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It appears you're falling for its popular but wrong rhetoric. Palestinians, manipulated and funded by the unelected dictators in the region for their own political gain, declared war on Israel the very next day after Israel was created in 1948. These dictators are thankfully being removed by their people now, who are finally seeing trough the lies and oppression. The Palestinians will need to stand on their own two feet and reach for peace, not war as they have been doing for sixty years.

  • luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-14 07:45

Kofi's plan was never intended to work in the first. It's one of the things I knew before he even went Syria. I even told Fred a while back that they would also lie about the government using chemical weapons on its people and look what came up in the news yesterday \chemical stockpiles out of storage\ . They don't tell you that they want a Qatar gas pipeline going through Syria to the EU to counter EU dependency on Russian gas and with Asaad being an ally of Russia that's not gonna happen. The aim to encircle both Russia and China they can't do that with a string Iran and Syria but you cant just do that you need lies. You need fake revolutions. If you don't believe this then why do you think that the US has just moved troops to Australia because they sense that their goal in the middle east is almost complete after Syria and Iran they have Russia as the next obstacle. The future conflicts will be in the far east in the lucrative South China Sea and they will side with you little Phillines,Taiwan or any countries that has a territorial dispute with China . Google Cecil John Rhodes and you will find an excerpt of his original will where he states what his goals you will see that they are following his orders. If you look at things at a face value you will rant about fake Syrian atrocities LOOK AT THE BIGGER GEOPOLITICAL ISSUE

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-14 09:48

      Whatever !!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-14 10:51

Big UPS Luyolo, you know your geo-politics very well and not blinded by this nonsense of spreading democracy and human rights. In the past it was about spreading civilisation and Christianity, today it has morphed into human rights and democracy. I am also worried about the US troops movement into Africa in the guise of fighting Al Qaede whilst its true intentions is to counter China's growing influence in the continent. I hope there are bright enough people in the ANC to be aware of this and fight this at the AU, even though has proved difficult because some of our African brethren are dependent on western "aid" for survival. Mr Chikane writes thus: An independent and critical state anywhere in the world does not sit well with western powers, who want to exert external influence. They are comfortable with pliable governments rather than independent-thinking states. The terrorism of the powerful against the weaker states! The highest form of corruption, buying states or countries by promising them one form of assistance or another, buying leaders directly to ensure that they are complaint. SA’s global engagement in facilitating peace in Africa has invited the wrath of of western powers that have interests in those countries. The freedom and liberation of Africans includes the right to make decisions without being manipulated or dictated to by foreign powers, especially the former colonialists. This gives me hope! The actors are the same, but their tactics have changed.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-14 11:36

Fidel, More of your endless BS !! The by far the majority of Africans are not interested in your silly, childish anti Western crap. WHAT AFRICANS WANT: The unemployed want--------------JOBS The starving want----------------FOOD The sick want---------------------MEDICINE You are not THAT uneducated, dumb and stupid, to believe these -------------SLIMY RUSSIANS, or these USELESS CHINESE,--------- will provide these. No, and I understand for a radical/extremist it must be impossible to bear, that these needs will be provided by ------------------------THE USA and EUROPE-------------------

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-14 11:59

So what you are saying is that Mr Frank Chikane, who was DG in the Presidency under Mr Mbeki is a BS..tter, with all the extensive access to diplomatic material and the intellect a million times compared to yours. You are a Simpleton and when it comes to geo-politics, your are out of your depth. Perhaps you should stick to subjects about knitting and gardening.

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-14 12:04

Let's look at Egypt people were killed using weapons that are part of the annual US military aid. A US that tells who we can or cannot buy oil from. A US that bails out bankers instead of bailing its own people. America is bankrupt national debt is at 15 trillion and it's people are suffering it needs to stop policing the world. Europe is suffering economically all thanks to an economic prison called the Euro where countries have lost sovereignty to unelected beurocracts in Brussels. People need to remove fear and use common sense like asking yourselves If Iran is dangerous then why havnt they ever waged war on any country. Some US politicians will respond when asked why do u think Iran will attack us by saying \ They hate the US because it's progressive\ . Can anyone answer here why they think Iran is a threat to the world ? Then there's that boring famous answer \They export terrorism\ . They export OIL

      luyolo.mhlauli.9 - 2012-07-14 12:15

Iran are also a threat to the Dollar Oil Standard because they no longer want to sell their oil in US dollars they want to sell it in Gold ( turkey just bought their oil in gold from\r\nIran) . Another person who wanted to do this was Muamar Gaddafi but he payed the ultimate price. If you want your country to be attacked do the following . Sell your oil in Gold ( Iran) or have a nationalised central bank ( Iran ,Libya not anymore) .

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 12:21

Fidel, ""So what you are saying is that Mr Frank Chikane, who was DG in the Presidency under Mr Mbeki is a BS..tter"" ---------------------------YES------------------------------- The damage Thabo Mbeki ( and the ones around him !! ) did to SA, and the Continent of Africa and its peoples, IS BEYOND BELIEVE !! His 'quite diplomacy' , meaning a slap on a dictator's back, and whisper in his ear, "it will all come right" Costs the lives of 3000 Ivorians, and the fleeing out of their own country, of MILLIONS OF ZIMBABWEANS. AND than this CRAP AND BS about hiv aids, which costs the lives of TENS OF THOUSANDS of SA aid sufferers !!! Thabo Mbeki is a CRIMINAL, who should be brought in front of the ICC, TO ANSWER CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY !!! ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-14 13:11

Luyolo, its an interesting interpretation. youve said a lot which I dont know is true or not so I wont comment. however, irrespective of whether there is a other things going on behind the scenes THE ONE THING YOU CANNOT DENY IS THAT ASSAD IS A DICTATOR AND THE SYRIAN PEOPLES ARE NOT FREE. THERE IS NOTHING FAKE ABOUT THAT, ITS A REALITY. and Assad will never let go of power. as you can see by him blowing away his people. and calling it "fake Syrian atrocities" is dumb and completely insensitive. it is HAPPENING !!!

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-07-14 13:31

Luyolo, I know a lot more about finance/economics than you do friend .. so let me correct your post ... 1) its not just the US that has blocked Iranian oil, its also the European Union. also, anyone can still buy Iranian oil, but the US has said that if they do, then they risk losing US business ... that is FAIR ENOUGH. 2) the US has got a high debt level, as you correctly stated about 15 trillion. however, the US's debt to GDP is about 100%, whereas Japan is over 200 % !!! Greece is about 170%. 3) the American people are NOT suffering. South Africans are suffering way more. US unemployment is 8 %, which is pretty low, albeit 2 or 3 % higher than normal. South Africa's unemployment is MUCH higher. the US has been creating jobs every month. South Africa was as recently as last month still losing jobs !!!! our government is useless and are sabotaging our economy. clearly other governments like the US and European governments have challenges. if we had a competent government (and just by listening to them you can't tell me you think they competent .. "eh eh eish uh eish") ... we have a handful of good minds in goverment, but a massive deployment of CADRES across all government spheres, based on their loyalty to the ANC and with zero regard to merit or competence !!!! this is a fact. our education system is a lot worse than it was 10 years ago. our public health system is a lot worse than 10 years ago. our infrastructure is creaking

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:38

There's little value in debating common-sense issues with people who hold immature core beliefs that the West is evil. They distort reality to support that belief. They weaken themselves with this belief, which is a blessing. They don't realize it though, which is a shame.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-14 13:57

Saddam Hussein had WMD's. He used them on his own people. He gassed thousands of Kurdish families. He also used them in his war against Iran, which maimed the lives of more than 500,000 Iranians.

There would be no wars in the middle east and there would be no future wars in Asia, Africa and other parts of the world which will be destabilized by neocon/globalist twisted men that present themselves as our oracles and defenders of the freer world. I also don't have a problem with Jewish people of Israel only with the Rothschild Zionists that hide under the Jewish umbrella and when we question their actions they say we are being anti-semitic .
