Arafat poisoned by polonium - report

2012-07-03 20:11

Doha - Yasser Arafat, who died in 2004, was poisoned by polonium, according to the findings of laboratory research carried out in Switzerland and cited in an Al Jazeera report on Tuesday.

The analysis focused on biological samples taken from the late Palestinian leader's belongings given to his wife Suha by the military hospital in Paris where he died, according to Francois Bochud, head of the Institute of Radiation Physics at the University of Lausanne.

"The conclusion was that we did find some significant polonium that was present in these samples," Bochud told Al Jazeera.

Polonium was used to kill Russian former spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with the radioactive substance at a London hotel.

Arafat, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the struggle for Palestinian statehood for nearly four decades, died on 11 November 2004, following several weeks of treatment.

He had been airlifted to France from his besieged headquarters in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to reveal the precise cause of death or the nature of his condition, fuelling a host of rumours and theories as to the cause of his illness.

At the time of his death at the age of 75, Palestinian officials charged he had been poisoned by longtime foe Israel, but an inconclusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out cancer, Aids or poisoning.

To confirm the theory that he was poisoned by polonium it would be necessary to exhume and analyse Arafat's remains, Bochud said.

"If [Suha Arafat] really wants to know what happened to her husband [we need] to find a sample - I mean, an exhumation... should provide us with a sample that should have a very high quantity of polonium if he was poisoned," he said.

I always knew polony was bad for you. LoL:-)

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-05 00:47

Jaba, I assuming you are lauding the great moral stance of zionism when you say say that israel 'could have killed him many times over', and something like filthier insects. I can remember a period in history when people were vilified in that sort of way. Can you? We wont know what killed him until the info is in will we. Altho polonium on clothes probably means polonium in body. Iran is interesting as an angle, but what is the motive, or are u just pointing randomly cause its easy? And while the verdict is out, why dont you watch some video of the 'most moral(ly decrepid)army in the world' -

  • Philip Buys - 2012-07-03 20:23

  • jerry.medina.756 - 2012-07-03 20:28

Why waste all that polonium while we have all these criminal leaders in Africa. How do you get hold of it?

  • David Bennett - 2012-07-03 20:36

A lot of people have heard the theory that he had Aids. Maybe he is with the 72 virgins now. After all he was the arch terrorist.

      cliff.slabbert - 2012-07-03 22:51

When he got there and they saw him all 72 virgins ran away screaming in absolute blood curdling fear !

      Ec - 2012-07-04 08:52

  • Afrikanerbul - 2012-07-03 20:49

I did not know polony is so unhealthy. Better stay away from all these MSG foods.

      rick.coetzee.7 - 2012-07-03 21:44

If polonium can do that to you just imagine how bad salamium is for you. I will have to rethink my next pizza order.

  • jaba.kov - 2012-07-04 06:36

LOL Mossad - ya right... Look to who wanted him dead - and that’s not Israel. Arafat was a mad terrorists but he loved the attention and being spoilt with billions of dollars (of which his wife continues to live the life of a beneficiary to a billionaires fortune) provided by the UN, EU, US and World Bank. Israel didn’t like want Arafat dead because he brought stability to an area that lacked it. If you want to know who did want Arafat dead, look no further then the Islamic brotherhood - the proof being the fact that today Hamas is successfully in power of Gaza for the last decade. Don’t forget that when the PA lost to Hamas, Hamas threw PA members off the building in Gaza (they murdered close to a thousand of Araft’s old guard). To conclude, even though Arafat probably did die of Aids (he was Gay) there is a chance that the Islamics killed him, but almost zero chance that Israel did because Israel got along with him and enjoyed the stability he was paid to provide in the area.

      commentator.guy - 2012-07-04 07:12

... They struggle to get thier hands on AK-47's yet now the palestinians suddenly have access to refined polonium? Isreal makes the most sense. Who knows what old Yasser was threatening to do. Also being gay does not automatically get you aids ^_^

      boom.baracus - 2012-07-04 09:06

Commntator Guy please rather keep your comments to yourself than display your ignorance. "They" have missiles, rockets, anti-tank missiles, and do not struggle to get any light artillery. Fool.

      Ec - 2012-07-04 09:19

Is Commentary.guy a member of the Muslim Brotherhood?

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-05 00:55

The rockets are made out of car exhausts; they have no anti tank missiles ( tho they did heroically destroy an idf tank once, blew it upside down if I recall) and even if they did have what u claim they have its nothing compared to getting $billions of American weaponry and subsidies and using the money to develop weapons that are tested on a civilian population. I think that polonium would be very difficult for them to get, but not so for the Israelis.

Where was Wouter at the time of the misdeed?

  • anwar.daniels - 2012-07-04 08:02

So much fear, so much hate, going by the comments on this page. Doesn't bode well for a progressive society and solution for the future, just a different version of apartheid

      boom.baracus - 2012-07-04 09:10

What exactly are you referring to re "a different version of apartheid"?

      anwar.daniels - 2012-07-04 17:32

Apartheid was borne of hate and fear, and whilst the future status won't physically resemble the structure, it will at its core

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-05 00:58

I think Anwar is making the point that zionism is a horrible system that is easily compared to apartheid. In fact I would go further and say that it is a horrible veneral disease of a political system. It is just filthy nationalism. Just check this out -
