Australian arrested in Malaysia for drug smuggling

Kuala Lumpur - An Australian woman was arrested in Malaysia after she was caught with 1.5kg  of methamphetamine, a news report said on Sunday.

The 51-year-old mother of four was to be charged of drug trafficking in court on Monday, according to airport customs chief Omar Lim.

Under Malaysian law, the woman faces a mandatory penalty of death if convicted of drug trafficking.

Omar told the Star newspaper that the suspect arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 7 December from Shanghai and was to have taken a connecting flight to Melbourne.

"While passing through the scanner at the arrival hall, we found the syabu [the local name for methamphetamine] wrapped in plastic and stashed inside a secret compartment in her travel bag," he was quoted by the Star newspaper as saying.
