Athens - Greek authorities were carrying out an autopsy on Friday to determine whether a 49-year-old woman was buried alive in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, the Athens News Agency (ANA) reported.

Doctors and ambulance crews were called to a cemetery in Peraias on the outskirts of Thessaloniki Thursday after a grave worker allegedly heard the woman - who was in the final stages of terminal cancer - calling for help from inside her grave.

The woman had been declared dead on Thursday at a private clinic and was buried the same day. The hospital said the doctor had performed an electrocardiogram to confirm the woman's death, according to a press release.

Emergency crews rushed to the cemetery and dug out her grave only to find the woman dead inside the coffin, with her eyes open.

"The family is trying to look at the facts objectively and calmly, as much as they can, but everything will be looked into," the family's lawyer Nikos Dialynas told the private television channel ANT1.
