New Jersey - Authorities said a baby who was found on fire in the middle of a residential road outside a southern New Jersey home has died from its injuries.

Investigators have not yet released details about the exact location or what happened.

Police were called to the scene in Pemberton Township, about 50km east of Philadelphia, around 23:00 on Friday.

Officers found the baby on fire and quickly doused the flames, but the child suffered severe burns and was taken to a hospital.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said Saturday the child has died.

The baby's name, gender and age were not immediately disclosed. The prosecutor said his office will release more information later Saturday.

Dave Joseph, 45, of Pemberton, told The Burlington County Times that he saw a young woman get out of her car and light something on fire in the middle of a road. He said the woman told him she was burning dog waste.

Joseph said the woman appeared calm and soon tried to flee the scene, but residents stopped her.

"It was just mind-boggling," Joseph said. "It was a nightmare even if you have a strong heart."
