Wellington - An alleged shoplifter provoked laughter when her trousers fell down while she was being chased by a shop assistant, a news report said on Thursday.

Shop assistant Kristie Asplin chased the woman 100m along a busy Auckland shopping street after she had taken a bag from a display stand and fled the store.

"I thought screw that, it's a 500-dollar bag [US$402], and the most expensive thing in our shop, so I chased her," Asplin was quoted as saying by Fairfax NZ News.

Asplin managed to catch the woman and retrieve the bag with help from bystanders.

"Everyone was laughing at her because her pants had fallen down and she wasn't wearing any knickers," she said.

Police later apprehended a suspected in a nearby street, and charges had been brought, the report said.
