Bin Laden worried about Muslim casualties

2012-05-03 20:39

Washington - Osama bin Laden worried about al-Qaeda attacks causing "unnecessary" Muslim casualties and advised his deputies to take more care to spare civilian lives, he wrote in a May 2010 letter published online on Thursday.

The al-Qaeda chief, killed in a US raid a year ago, underscores "the need to cancel other attacks due to the possible and unnecessary civilian casualties" in Muslim countries, according to the letter.

"We ask every emir in the regions to be extremely keen and focused on controlling the military work," he wrote, referring to al-Qaeda attacks.

Bin Laden expressed concern about his network losing the sympathy of Muslims and described operations killing Muslims as "mistakes", adding that was important that "no Muslims fall victim except when it is absolutely essential."

"It would lead us to winning several battles while losing the war at the end," he wrote.

The letter was among 17 declassified documents that the White House allowed to be published online by the Combating Terrorism Center at the West Point military academy.

The papers include letters or draft letters dated from September 2006 to April 2011, a total of 175 pages in the original Arabic.

    Wow..such a thoughtful caring man!

  • Muhammad - 2012-05-03 21:10

one man's terrorist, another mans freedom fighter.

      Gustav Weich - 2012-05-03 21:18

Targeting and slaughtering innocent civilians makes you a terrorist. Period.

      Muhammad - 2012-05-03 21:40

@ Gustav; Margaret Thatcher labeled Nelson Mandela a terrorist.

      gustav.weich - 2012-05-03 21:46

Do you agree that Bin Laden was a terrorist?

      Muhammad - 2012-05-03 21:55

Nope, I don't feel threatened by Nelson Mandela nor did I feel threatened by Osama.

      Alistair - 2012-05-03 21:58

Muhammad, Bin Ladin has the blood of thousands of innocents on his hands, he was a religious zealot. Fighting for freedom, I think not.....

      gustav.weich - 2012-05-03 22:01

So I assume by \nope\ you are saying you dont believe he was a terr? I didnt ask if you felt threatened by him.

      Muhammad - 2012-05-03 22:10

@Alistair ; your comment represents your shortsightedness and bias in this matter. Do not look at what Osama propagated in isolation but take into account the cause. If the west had refrained from meddling in the sovereignty of Islamic states, you would not have even heard of Osama.

      Alistair - 2012-05-03 22:25

Muhammad, Bin Laden was clear in his hatred for America and its liberal values, this came from his extreame islamist perspective. All of his siblings disavowed him and his actions and live relitivley modern, 'liberal' western lives. If he disagrees with a nations actions why target innocent civilions with a religious pretext. The answer, this is no longer about politics, but a hatred for western values based on an extreame form of intollerant Islam. I'm sure there are people in Denmark who abhor American foreign policy, but do they target innocent civilians claiming that they are the servants of a "great satan" no they do not...

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 00:17

Exactly how did "the West meddle in the sovereignty of Muslim states"?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 07:35

Let's follow the logic. You perceive the West is meddling in the sovereignty of Islamic states, so you and your fellow Jihadists blow up hundreds of thousands of Muslims, and innocent standers by. Brilliant. Allah would be proud of you.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 16:00

I haven't heard back from you Muhammed. Bin Laden declared war on the US because he was enraged Saudi Arabia allowed foreign forces to use Saudi Arabia to repel Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. He was expelled from Saudi Arabia, and with his many millions of dollars (he came from a wealthy family) convinced gullible young Muslims with tragic martyr-beliefs to blow themselves up and kill and maim hundreds of thousands of civilians. He did this to try and terrorize the world into doing what he wanted. So while you're enclosing yourself into a self-centered, autistic bubble, hundreds of thousands of people (mainly Muslim) have been killed and maimed by the self-proclaimed Al-Quaida and Taliban terrorists. Wake up! Snap out of it!! You're detaching yourself from what is really going on in the world, mainly the Muslim world. If you have any modicum of a conscience, which even the sociopath Bin Laden started having, and care about humanity at all, you should be working to reduce these senseless killings and mailings, and working for real peace.

They'll downsize. There's always a need for a strong defense force.

  • Kolobe - 2012-05-03 21:24

americans killed way more innocent civillians

      Alistair - 2012-05-03 21:59

They did not purposefully slaughter innocents and declare it the will of god.....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 00:18

      Exactly where and when?

  • Khotso Thabo - 2012-05-03 21:36

i say that his not dad unless we was shown his body or they are just playing mind games

      Ken - 2012-05-03 21:58

Khotso, he's been dad a few times, now he's dead, just like your brain!

      Pule - 2012-05-03 22:10

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-03 22:18

      Ken, That is soo funny.....hahahaha

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 01:10

Bin Laden's own website says he's dead. And have you seen him anywhere the past year?

did he had a heart,i mean what do u call a command that says:when u kill yourself and the enemy, you'll be in the kingdom of alla/god.that man was busy decreasing the muslim population.i can bet ma last cent that he,saddam, gadhaffi, hitler are rotting nicely in hell.the moron was using god's name to promote hatred and unnecessary killings just like the apartheid regime in south africa

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-04 06:36

Well said. Then there are people like Muhammed who blame the West because Bin Laden and his affiliates choose to kill and maim HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Muslims. It's almost unbelievable were it not so tragic. Even Bin Laden, with his crazed smile, started to feel some remorse, a slither. As long as there are Muslims who think like Muhammed, there will be unnecessary Muslim suffering.

  • naeem.aslamessop - 2012-05-04 07:26

As long we muslims and non muslims fight over thses issues. Richest will get richer and poorer will get poorer. Because thats the plan hate eachother over religon and race and dont get along with eachother. Acusing that Muslims are bad and none muslims are bad is not not going to solve anything. If muslims are bad then please tell me how come muslims and none muslims are working and living togahter in South Africa. I will be shocking to hear if none muslims feel threatn from muslims in this country. Usma binladin or Bush OR Obama no matter who is out there killing people dosent matter. We need to stop hateing eachother and stop blaming cause. No matter what end of the day we all pay same amount of patrol no matter who put the price up.LOL
