Tokyo - A blizzard barrelled into the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido on Sunday with heavy snow burying some cities and strong winds disrupting traffic, local media reported.

A low-pressure system had already dumped up to 50cm of snow in the eastern part of the island and some locations in north-eastern Japan with the Meteorological Agency warning of high waves and strong winds in the regions, broadcaster NHK reported.

More than 50 train services and dozens of flights have been cancelled on Hokkaido on Sunday, while major highways were closed in many parts of the island, Hokkaido newspaper reported.

Up to 50cm of snow is expected on Hokkaido and 40cm of snow in Sea of Japan coastal regions by Monday noon, the agency said.
