'Bored' boy, 9, burns down supermarket

Vienna - A 9-year-old Austrian boy was responsible for starting a fire that destroyed a supermarket, police said on Friday following a four-month investigation.

Police gave no details but media reports said that the boy set fire to rolls of toilet paper on the shelves of the store in Dornbirn, western Austria, because he was "bored".

The blaze in June caused several million euros' worth of damage, with 100 firefighters having to contend with exploding aerosols and glass shelving shattering. No one was hurt.

Police discovered in subsequent enquiries at a nearby school that the boy, who has not been named, was responsible, the Kurier daily reported on Friday.

"The child is below the age of criminal responsibility," a spokesperson for police in the state of Vorarlberg said. "We would prefer not to give details of our investigation at this stage."

If this was in SA readers of News 24 would blame Zuma.

Ha-ha yes, but Melena gets the blame some of the time :-) Sure not good of the kid and where the parents, but on the other hand how does the supermarket design and the build-in fire systems allow a fire from "toilet rolls" to go so out of control?

@ HV, not even at home do we un justly place the blame on JZ if not neccesary. Most of the times we blame his retarded followers that let him get away with murder and then still support him

No Comments? Zuma is not the president and the ANC does not rule there. What now?

Obviously his parents havent done a good job. Those are psychopathic tendencies he is manifesting. Hold the parents liable!

shirley, those are ASPD traits and it's likely he wets his bed too...there's no reason to hold parents liable for the development of ASPD, since it's a combination of genetic traits and the child's environment. Many serial killers had fantastic childhoods with loving parents.

At least this child will get assessed and helped, he may have issues of abuse or a undetected mental disorder, at least no one was hurt.

As long as we do not hold our children accountable for their actions, mischief will lead to misdemeanours and later to serious crimes against society (like arson)...

Austria seems to be attracting this sort of weird s$%t, whats going on there? First Fritzel, then the guy who kept his mother in a freezer, now this...

  • Christopher Steenkamp - 2012-10-20 15:14

The last thing we need is for kids to figure out they can burn s%!t down without any real consequence. We'll have a throng of midget anarchists on our hands very soon, blackmailing supermarkets for bigger sweet isles.
