Boston bomb suspect in 'serious' condition

2013-04-20 07:53

Watertown - An ethnic Chechen teenager suspected of conducting the Boston marathon bombings is in a serious condition and being treated in hospital after his dramatic capture, police said on Friday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, aged 19, was found hiding in a boat in the backyard of a house in the Boston suburb of Watertown, wounded and weary after a gun battle with police overnight in which his accomplice brother was killed.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said that with Tsarnaev's arrest, "the citizens of the city of Boston and this area can be confident that the threat has been removed".

Police, state troopers and FBI agents zeroed in on the boat on Franklin Street after a man went out of the house and saw blood on the boat, Davis said.

The man then opened the tarp covering the boat and saw a man covered with blood inside, and called police.

"I'm so happy because the people in the greater Boston area will be able to sleep tonight because of the work of these individuals," Boston Mayor Thomas Merino told reporters, in a tribute to police and law enforcement agencies.

200 rounds of fire exchanged

Davis said a perimeter was set up around the boat before a major operation ended a drama that started with the twin bombing at the marathon on Monday.

"Over the course of the next hour or so, we exchanged gunfire with the suspect who was inside the boat," he said.

"And ultimately, the hostage rescue team of the FBI made an entry into the boat and removed the suspect who was still alive in the boat."

The two main suspects in the bombings that killed three people and wounded about 180 others - Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan - were located after a police officer was killed and another wounded during a violent spree overnight that began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's campus.

Davis said more than 200 rounds of gunfire were exchanged during that incident, and that the two men had hurled improvised explosive devices and handmade hand grenades at officers.

The 26-year-old elder brother died of bullet wounds and injuries from explosives strapped to his body, a hospital doctor said.

Hope he doesn't die before telling the truth

      Bruce van Ravesteyn - 2013-04-20 09:19

He won't get to tell the truth. America cant afford it.

      Ciaran - 2013-04-20 09:46

Myfather Arikado. It doesnt matter who was behind it. A terrorist is a terrorist, cowards who kill innocent people.

      Draadsitter - 2013-04-20 10:09

@Ciaran: like our famous Mc Goo Bar bomber in Durban who got away with blowing up innocent private citizens in the afore mentioned bar and is now almost treated as a kind of a folk hero by the cANCer ruling this country in the name of Democracy and Freedom. And there are many more like him.

      Myfather Arikado - 2013-04-20 10:47

Ciaran, yes, but the US, like always, will manipulate this incident without give the "terrorist" a chance to announce the motive behind. And use this as an excuse to send troops to whatever country they can benefit economically from it.

      Jacques Walker - 2013-04-20 11:02

Agree he is just another patsy. Why were there so many US seals at the marathon. False flag?

      Happy Tails - 2013-04-21 00:11

shame Jacques , you believe everything a fat american (alex jones) , who sells diet products, says? how do you know they are Navy Seals?

      Barry Roper - 2013-04-21 18:06

Jaques Walker, If you have been following the WHOLE STORY you will learn that there was a contingent of the US Army who marched with full packs in the Marathon, They were the ones who were helping the injured. I remember doing a similar march many years ago to raise money for charity. NOTHING SINISTER ABOUT THAT.

      yakoobm - 2013-04-24 22:27

Myfather Arikado -is right and after FOUR days the FACTS vindicate him. All the Boston Bombing .. who did it and who did not. PROOF! Boston Marathon Bombing is a Staged Terror Attack Proof - Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's Back-Pack was photo-shopped out. Its all there :-

Did anyone notice that the American Police looked in healthy and strong bodies not like our police forces all are overweight carrying KFC Stomachs.

      Treatwell Trey - 2013-04-20 08:15

Anyone notice that this is the dumbest comment in thid article, Oh so America doesn't have overweight cops carrying donughts stomachs..

      Anton Geijsendorpher - 2013-04-20 08:22

If you look at the video footage you see some of the "normal" police officers are not exactly super models ;-) These are SWAT / military types. You do realise they all received extensive training and receive good wages? Did you also notice the infrastructure support / advanced tactical gear? How can you compare all that against our poorly equipped/trained/paid SAPS?

      Abner M. Mophethe - 2013-04-20 08:30

by the way KFC is from america you dumb ass,do you think they dont eat it there?

I haven't seen any definite proof that these brothers did it. I'm not saying they are innocent, I'm just saying that something doesn't add up. I think people should stop believing everything so blindly without any investigation. Those brothers weren't the only suspicious people in that crowd.

      Brendan Keith Shaw - 2013-04-20 09:36

(NEWSER) – How's this for a standout detail as the Boston bombing investigation unfolds: The FBI interviewed elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 but didn't deem him a security risk at the time. The agency talked to him after getting a tip from a foreign government that he was a "follower of radical Islam," reports Reuters. The FBI isn't saying which country offered the tip, though Russia would seem to be a reasonable guess. The Tsarnaev brothers are ethnic Chechens—though they never actually lived in Chechnya—and Tamerlan visited Russia for six months last year, reports CNN. (Some reports say both brothers were born in Krygyzstan, and others say that Tamerlan was born in Krygyzstan and Dhzokhar in Dagestan, notes the Guardian.)

  • Derek Bekker - 2013-04-20 08:52

Why the standoff while he is in the boat?? They could have towed the boat to prison and left the guy there..

      Prada Ledger - 2013-04-20 09:51

i also dont get that part, i guess they do it just like we see in the movies, 9000 cops to 1 kid

      Billy Banter - 2013-04-20 14:36

Because that wouldn't be enough drama for the world's media and Obama needs a bit of popularity right now.

  • Rikky_Sellis - 2013-04-20 09:32

Doesn't anyone think its quite odd that this article doesn't really say ANYTHING about HOW or WHY these guys were suspected in the first place? It's as if everyone can safely assume it's them because the brother had bombs strapped on him. I agree this is compelling, but these unanswered questions still makes this story feel either censored or incomplete.

      Frank Coetzee - 2013-04-20 10:03

Come on Rikky. Just like several other commentors such as one guy that called another an smartass because there is no evidence it's them, do you really think or expect these NOT banana republic will make public more evidence as that is necessary in circumstances. Actually "proof" is irrelevant because the guys did had bombs with them and exchanged gunfire with police so regardless the marathon bombing.... With the number of officers against one man and gunfire exchanged it's a miracle he was not shot to pieces and is proof just how hard the cops tried to get him ALIVE so there goes another conspiracy theory. (Otherwise just one agent would be enough to blow up the boat and buried the poor victim of Government conspiracies)

      Rikky_Sellis - 2013-04-20 10:33

Clearly we do not agree on what evidence is necessary. The "proof" you mention only regards last night incidents. I was talking about proof that they are the marathon bombers. Cops shooting at a guy with bombs is also not the best move I can think of, especially since everyone there has seen how destructive it can be.

      Gail Hayes-Bean - 2013-04-20 16:30

Ricky I believe that these two were picked up by CCTV cameras at the scene of the Marathon bombings and were behaving in a suspicious manner. The pictures from said CCTV cameras were then displayed on TV as being people that the authorities believed could help them in their investigation into who set the bombs leading to the tragedy. Now imagine this - guilty/not guilty you have Muslim beliefs and are a foreigner in the States married with a child and also in the case of the younger brother a student living in a hostel at Uni. Your wife is watching TV at home and suddenly your face and that of her brother in law appear on the screen in connection with the bombing. What would an innocent person do in that case. You are a Muslim and there is very strong anti Muslim feeling right now. You want to live and you know you are innocent. Would you (a) strap on a bomb first just in case justice is not what America says it is, contact little brother and advise him to do the same and join you or (b) call younger brother and advise him to meet you unarmed at the nearest police station so you can turn yourselves in and explain why you were caught on camera at the scene behaving suspiciously? We have only the sensationalist media to rely on for this information and they need to sell papers. The authorities need scapegoats because an atrocity occurred on THEIR beat and same FBI will censor media. What would you have done? America is a trigger happy society.

  • Marc Spaull - 2013-04-20 09:37

Not that we can forget the bombing - these two brothers robbed a 7/11 store, shot a Transit Cop dead, hijacked a car with the driver, had a full blown gun battle with the cops?? All this in a high residential area, where there were numerous witnesses - other than just the cops.. these 2 youngsters have shown their true intentions.

      Rikky_Sellis - 2013-04-20 09:49

I claim that anyone who can effectively plant, build and detonate bombs would never be so stupid or so needy as to rob a 7/11 and turn all attention upon themselves - at least not without detonating those bombs strapped to them -.

      Gail Hayes-Bean - 2013-04-20 17:01

All of this we know because the media have told us so and everything you read in the media is accurate and proven to be true? Always remain sceptical of what you read in the media since they (a) may not have all the facts (B) the facts they do have come from a dubious source which they think is telling the truth such as government sources or people with ulterior motives who want money. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MONEY AND THE MOTIVE. Who stands to benefit from these atrocities when it isn't a grudge killing . Of course it is just possible that these two did rob a store and were already being sought by authorities and the reason they strapped bombs on and engaged the police in a firefight could be because they didn't want to dishonour their families and were prepared to die before they would go to prison. It is equally possible that they were not the bombers but just in the wrong place at the time the bombs went off. What else was happening in the period just before this bombing occurred that the authorities and gun happy people of the NRA wanted to draw attention away from? Let's see, there was a very contentious vote on curbing and controlling the gun laws going on which the gun makers couldn't afford to lose and a large explosion which killed only three people but maimed others would both draw attention away from the beneficiaries and also make Americans who were beginning to think they were safe from terror attacks think again about banning guns. WMD remember Iraq?

      Happy Tails - 2013-04-21 00:35

apparently you dont have to be that clever to make a pipe bomb.

  • Alan Smith - 2013-04-20 09:38

Is this the sequal to The Running Man? Media circus, round the clock coverage, people celebrating in the streets like they've just won a major sporting event. A rather disturbing commentary on the state of human affairs.

  • Freddy van Wijk - 2013-04-20 09:40

The motive behind the atrocities is always intriguing. In this case I think it goes about Chechnya's struggle for years on end to be an independent state.

  • Teboho Martin - 2013-04-20 09:42

I think there's more to the story!but we know america has lot of enemies but , why this boy and who sent these boys?.and one thing I like about Obama is , he doesn't take citizens for granted.

  • Caine Abel - 2013-04-20 09:55

      rooibok - 2013-04-20 10:23

I'm not a Muslim but why must we judge people by religion and ethnicity? Why media give whatever is happening in US so much attention? How many people die in other countries in Arab and African countries which media doesn't cover? Why must we Sympathize with them? Do Americans adhere to Geneva Convention when they use their drones? What a hell is so special about the Americans? I don't condone any act of terrorism and I don't condone killing of innocent civilians. I empathize with the families that lost love ones to act of terrorism, crime and aggressive behavior from superpowers. ONE LOVE.

@Themba - I am a muslim. I agree with your comments. I condemn these actions by the perpertrators in the strongest form... I also agree that an innnocent live lost is precious, whether you are American, African or Arab... I do not believe the American people are bad, but their government actions cannot be supported as they are guilty of heinous crimes against humanity.

Shaun Brooks - 2013-04-21 14:36 doesnt make sense to blame a faith for what misguided people do...the bible or quran never once mentions bombing people...yet people do it and call themselves muslims...thats wrong...but whats worse is the comments here on this site where people act dumb by blaming islam and muslims...think clearly before you just type comments...have respect for innocent people,,,,and criminals deserve their punishment...that we agree on...

If the father of suspect #2 travels to the US at this time he had better not be allowed anywhere near his son. Radical muslims have been known to kill their own children who they believe have brought shame on the family. And no one wants him to die before he has told the truth about his reason for killing and maiming these wonderful fit sports people and their spectators. Even more so as these two brothers were themselves top sportsmen and should have had feeling of close association with their fellow sportsmen!

so when a man commits a crime its islam's fault...our religion does not say you can murder...i dont see christians called 'christian extremists' when they commit a crime...the same with a jewish criminal...doesnt it mean that when a person commits a crime it has nothing to do with a religion...all it says is that the man or woman is a can you blame christianity, judaism or islam or any other peaceful belief, when someone commits a crime in the name of the belief...people use your brains...a criminal stays a criminal...since when did islam say one must bomb people...its wromg to make that association...

  • Fabre Geffrard - 2013-04-22 01:18

why is he seen getting up from the boat just fine on his own if the cops are now saying that he is currently in critical condition in the hospital, and may never recover enough to speak to public on what happened?

  • De Fiandt - 2013-04-24 10:16

That's amazing he was shot in the head, neck, both legs and the hand, was discovered covered in blood, and yet he's able to climb out of a boat with no visible blood or sign of injury. He must be some sort of wizard or something. I'm afraid lethal injection won't work, they're going to have to shoot him with a silver bullet, put a stake through his heart and then burn him. We'll still have to fear his incorporeal essence, unfortunately.

  • De Fiandt - 2013-04-24 10:22

Anyone who was listening to the police scanner when the suspect was located in the boat can tell you: 200 shots? Didn't happen.
