Bring back Reagan, Americans say

New York - If they could somehow bring back a past president, many Americans would sooner have a Republican in office than a Democrat, a survey released on Monday showed.

Thirty-six percent of those polled said they would pick Ronald Reagan over Franklin D Roosevelt, as the world's largest economy continues to struggle, according to the poll by 60 Minutes television show and Vanity Fair magazine.

"Bring back the Gipper, say 36% of Americans who chose Ronald Reagan over Franklin Delano Roosevelt (29%) when asked which past president they would want in the White House in these trying times," 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair said in a statement announcing the results.

Only 14% opted for Thomas Jefferson to return to office.

More than 60% of the 1 012 people questioned in the nationwide poll said that fears about past actions coming to light would prevent them running for office, with women more worried about what might be dug up about them during a campaign.

Although many people would prefer Clinton to get the vice president's job if Biden does not resume the roll in 2012, 5% of people said talk show host Oprah Winfrey should be considered for the position.

In a vote that might explain the sea of student laptops in every Starbucks in America, 50% of younger Americans polled said that it was acceptable to use the coffee house chain's free internet all day after buying a drink.

In the poll, 68% of Americans have read a book in the past month and the same percentage of Americans believe that the US Postal Service should operate at least five days a week as the threat of insolvency looms.

Lawmakers are considering ending on Saturday deliberation in restructuring plans.

Americans can be stupid...they should vote to get the Federal Reserve Bank abolished...which is the cause of their problems.

If you look at the average education of an American one can understand this response. Most American adults, given a globe and asked to point out the location of Japan, Australia and Kenya, would fail. A surprising number would wonder what the globe was as they think the Earth is a flat circle (Isaiah 40:22).

@Pitchblack, I agree with you 100%. The Fed Reserve has been there since 1913 (If memory serves). They will never be "allowed" to get rid of it. The Fed and the IMF etc has been created for specific reasons (I presume that you know what they are :) ). Also, Soros has a huge hand in it as well as other elite families. It does not matter if they elect a rep or dem, they are all puppets (as we know). If I had to choose a president, I would go for Allen West. I would not go Perry, Paul, Palin, Buchannan.

I believe one of Ron Paul's agendas is to end the Fed is it not? I really like that guys thinking...don't know about Allan West though

Get the ANC to fix America . Look at us , we are no longer suffering !!! Apartheid abolished , our economy is growing , free houses and soon we will get private medical care for the poor. I forgot free feeding schemes in schools . Learn from the African giant !!!

      africanwolf - 2011-11-01 14:24

      You are joking right?

      Brian - 2011-11-01 14:46

I certainly hope she is!!!! If not .... man oh man are we in trouble!

      Angela - 2011-11-01 14:59

No jokes guys . You are in bigger trouble than you thought. We are very much in love with the ANC and you can only understand if you were the oppressed during apartheid . And guys , in AMerica you won;'t get the life style here . I know . With freedom I got a chance to travel the world . You are in big trouble , very big trouble .

      africanwolf - 2011-11-01 15:25

@ Angela apartheid was very wrong and is over long time ago, I did not participate in it, (was not in SA then) it is time to look forward. with the crime statistics in SA, I don't think we are heading the right way. Americans have much less crime than we do, because they have efficient police. and Americans don't allow Chinese to run their lives. China killed SA manufacturing industry in the past 15 years, therefore we do not have jobs, and there are so many unemployed youth. in Joburg alone there are 12 Chinese centres that sell cheap Chinese imports, that cost SA citizens their jobs. think about it again. by the way the ANC have some good policies, the problem is corruption within the ranks.

      Angela - 2011-11-01 15:49

Americans have waged war on Iraq , Kuwait , Libya and the next in line is whosoever has oil . Please do not tell me its the best place to stay !!! If they were peace keepers they could have jumped in on Rwanda. The highest crime in the world is in America. The only sad story is that they take the crime to other people's door steps and protect their on children. Who are the Chinese fighting please let me know !!!! They are actually very hard working people.

      africanwolf - 2011-11-02 07:08

The Chinese are very hard working people but they caused many South Africans to lose their jobs because a South African citizen can not work for a plate of rice per day therefore can not compete with the Chinese and in China workers are not allowed to strike

Now I know that they are putting funny stuff in the water. Reagan??? was his " get government out of our lives" stupidity that started this whole thing. First the S & L scandal....payout by the American taxpayer. Then it was Iran Contra ...also paid by the taxpayer. Then it was deregulation of so many areas that with the exception of Clinton ( a Democrat with some brains), the U.S. government has been in deficit adding to the credit crunch. Now with the Wall street debacle under Bush ( another conservative whiz bang)the whole world's economy has almost imploded, and they want to return to this type of plundering and non oversight of the greedy and unscrupulous???? dumb really are they??

  • DREGstudios - 2011-11-03 02:26

Reagan has a legacy so distorted by the Conservative idolization of him that we may never have a clear picture of the real man behind the television set beyond the elaborate myth now concocted of him. Did he really rid the world of commie scum? Did destroy or save our economy? Check out my portrait of The Gipper in commemoration of the Reagan Centennial and help me figure it out on my artist’s blog at
