Britain might recall Israel envoy: Source

2012-12-03 10:05

Jerusalem - Britain is considering recalling its ambassador to Israel to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to expand settlement building, a diplomatic source said on Monday.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported that France was also considering withdrawing its envoy.

Both embassies declined to comment on the reports, but the British issued a statement saying they had made clear they would not support strong Israeli retaliation to a UN vote last week that gave the Palestinians de facto recognition of statehood.

"The recent Israeli government decision to build 3 000 new housing units threatens the two-state solution and makes progress through negotiations harder to achieve," the British embassy in Tel Aviv said.

"We have called on the Israeli government to reconsider."

A diplomatic source, who declined to be named, said London would decide later in the day whether to recall its ambassador.

Tax revenues withheld

Such a move by both London and Paris would represent a severe diplomatic reproach to Netanyahu. Israel's Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon told Israeli Army Radio he was not aware of any recall.

"I did not hear of this, either via the foreign ministry or the prime minister's office. Therefore I have a hard time believing it is true," he said.

Netanyahu has brushed off world condemnation of his latest settlement plans, which were announced on Friday just hours after the United Nations voted overwhelming to upgrade the Palestinians' diplomatic status.

"We will carry on building in Jerusalem and in all the places that are on the map of Israel's strategic interests," Netanyahu said on Sunday at a weekly cabinet meeting.

Besides authorising 3 000 new homes in and around Jerusalem, the Israeli government also agreed to expedite planning work for thousands more homes on barren land near Jerusalem that critics say would kill off Palestinian hopes of creating a viable state.

In another blow to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, Israel announced on Sunday it was withholding Palestinian tax revenues this month worth about $100m.

Israel said it was taking the money to help cover a Palestinian debt of $200m with the Israeli Electric Corporation.

So does this rogue state become a pariah state in the eyes of the world, this move by netanyahu is because his approval rating went up after his last murderous bombing campaign in Gaza!If this is the collective will of the Israeli people then the world should see them now clearly as spoilers of peace and all the time and effort wasted on the peace process is a slap in the face of the international community. Now hopefully the broader world community will wake up and see what this desperate inferiority complexed nation are capable off and adopt more confrontational tactics to deal with Israel like you would deal with a naughty spiteful child! - 2012-12-03 16:47

It's not about Israel. It's about Jews.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-12-03 18:57

Time to take charge. France and Britain did not oppose Palestinian unilateral action at the UN, so they must now sit back and accept Israel's unilateral response. Israel should withdraw its ambassadors.

Its about time the world unite against this rightwing govt of Netanyahu. The world cannot be held to ransom by Israel. For people who hv been brutalised by da nazis to be doin the same thing other human beings its so SAD.

  • derek.bredenkamp.3 - 2012-12-03 10:23

Agree with Dunkie 100%, except to add that we should also recall our own diplomats immediatly.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-12-03 18:58

In a world where , irespective of actions the Isreali's take it's their fault , a time will come and appears to be that they stop worrying about what the world says. When you attacked by neighbouring countries (of course this is inline with international law), its Isreal's fault. When close to a million Jews are displaced , its their fault. When other Arab nations use Palestinian terrritories as platforms for annhilatory invasion while under their occupation , its Isreal's fault. After the first attempt , when other nations threaten your exisitence and you voice concern , you the aggressor and its your fault. When you treat your citizens based the very values the UN supposedly was founded , you get a Durban conference saying you are racist (since repealed, how many neighbouring countries live up to the UNDHR). When every concession you make is reciprocated with violence and terror , its Isreal's fault again . Why would the rest of the world hold any of the other nations in the region to the same standard as Israel ? Of course the Isreali's and Jews must be the worsest kind of people , hatefilled monstors , everything the propaganda tells you and more for all these accusations and responsibility to be true .

      sonja.brandt1 - 2012-12-03 12:06

So what ur saying is that because others do bad things it makes it ok for everyone to do bad things? Wow, you truly open minded. I don't know what propaganda ur speaking about, because the only propaganda that I know of is that of Israeli's portraying the Palestinians as terrorists. It is about time the world sees the TRUTH: that Israel is terrorizing the Palestinian people. Full stop.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-12-03 14:18

@Sonja -Holy S%it i said that! What I'am commenting on is the ' I support Palestinians so Isreal must be evil' mentality which manifests itself in Isreal being to blame for everything .This binary is evident in your statement "TRUTH: that Israel is terrorizing the Palestinian people. Full stop." The same exact statement holds for Isreal ,'Truth : Palestinians are terrorizing the Isreali people.Full Stop'.I support the Isreali's right to exist and to defend itself , this however doesn't preclude me from supporting Palestinian aspirations for statehood , vice versa applies. So call me closed minded for rejecting the idea that Isreal is evil ect , when the theory fails miserably at the first test. PS: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion probably the most notorius piece of anti-semetic propoganda , forms part of the Hamas charter and is ubiquitiously used in the ME media. Isreali comentators are not permitted to present their side of events on Eqyptian state media. Look up 'pioneers of tomorrow' and give me a view on that Palestinian show.

      Dave - 2012-12-03 16:32

Sonja I think you have more nb things to worry about i.e. the complete destruction of the Afrikaaner people - you are very quickly becoming irrelevant, a blip in the annals if history. Israel and Jews will never allow that to happen to them.

If you people want to know what this Netanyahoo guy has done in his life time - READ THE ORIGINS OF TERRORISM and then you will know get an idea of the what kind of sickness these "leaders have". This guy .... this guy is a bad guy - true evil. - 2012-12-03 14:32

I read the Koran, i didnt see "Netanyahoo" name there...

      Dave - 2012-12-03 16:27

Oh please be quite you brainwashed moron - instead of talking twak how about reseraching Arab vs Arab atrocities. In fact even better, Muslim vs Muslim (Syria, Iran vs Iraq etc), Muslim vs Christian, Muslim vs Kurds (example would be Saddam gassing entire Kurdish village), etc etc. Islam is at the centre of most violent confrontations.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-12-03 19:04

Laughable. While Israel is building homes for people on barren land, syria is destroying whole neighborhoods and towns, along with over 40 000 of its own citizens, right next door. And you call Netanyahoo a terrorist. We are living in a world full of the most terrible sickness, but we can count on Israeli's to find and implement a cure. Are the Syrian ambassadors still in Britain and France?

  • oopkop.denker - 2012-12-03 12:01

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-12-03 19:06

Jy verstaan vokol. Israelse mense wil leef in vrede. Die Palesteine will hulle vermoor en die hele Israel terug kry.

    Down the sewage pipe, Israel.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-12-03 19:08

The Israeli sewage pipe empties into the Palestinian territories.

      diana.gill.18 - 2012-12-03 21:42

Exactly where you're expanding with your settlements? No surprise you'll soon drown in your own s..tuff.

  • Dave - 2012-12-03 16:24

Israel should simply say enougn is enough, what you have now is yours, those parts of the w-bank where we have settlements are part of Israel, Entire Jerusalem remains as part of Israel - finished and klaar. No more trying to negotiate with brainwashed Muslims. We accept that we will will never be friends - as we accept that we will never be friends with the entire Middle East - so be it, we have thrived in the last 60 years establishing the economic and militray power-house of the Middle East, we can live like this. Quite frankly, you arabs offer no value.

      Dave - 2012-12-03 16:43

Patrick do you seriously think this a numbers game? Majority of world;s countries are burdened with corrpution and/or dire poverty alligned with low levels of education (pretty much every Arab country) - Israel doesnt need them nor care what they think anymore - for too long these ME countries have sought Israel's destruction, rubicon has been crossed, Israel forging a future without the need to appease them. Iran has been publicly calling for the destruction of Israel, for them to be wiped off the map - we shall see who gets wiped first.

      duncan.gill1 - 2012-12-03 16:58

Dave if you are so sure of Israeli strength and perseverance in the face of opposition why don't you go there and help your kin folk in their madness. It's easy to sit here and shout and scream but it takes a real man to follow through on his beliefs and take action!Cause my friend taking Israel's current course of action you will sorely be needed!

      Dave - 2012-12-03 17:18

If and when needed I will be there. You and your wife make a point of spending your time posting anti-Israel comments - nice couple must make great parents. Noted. ps: I am not your friend, far from it.

I don't think so.... this article is hardly believable...... and it is a side track to the murderous killings going on in Syria..... I see a freaking McDonalds on every Arab Street corner and a Coke Vending machine outside every Mosque within the next ten years..... forward to the west.... this freaking east-crap is annal.

  • fidel.mgoqi - 2012-12-04 13:44

Zionism and peace are incompatible! The pretense of supporting a two state solution by these Zionist vampires has been clear to anyone who understand the sick Zionist credo.
