Celebrations in Gaza after Tel Aviv blast

2012-11-21 14:00

Tel Aviv - The mosque opposite the Shifa hospital in Gaza City broadcast praise for an attack that left seventeen people injured after an explosion on a bus near the defence ministry in Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

"God is great, God is great. An operation in the heart of the Zionist entity," rang out from the mosque's loudspeakers. Celebratory gunfire could also be heard after the reports of the blast.

Israel has been locked in a deadly week-long confrontation with Palestinian militants in the Hamas-run Gaza strip, whose Al-Aqsa television channel on Wednesday welcomed news of the explosion.

"Hamas welcomes the martyrdom operation and affirms that it is a natural reply to to the massacre of the Dallu family and the targeting of Palestinian civilians," it said in a statement.

It was referring to nine members of a Gaza family who were killed in an Israeli air strike on Sunday.

The blast took place as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on ways to end a deadly spike in bloodshed in and around Gaza over the past week.

Terrorist attack

A spokesperson for Israel's Magen David Adom emergency services said one person was in moderate to serious condition, three were in moderate condition and seven people lightly injured, while another six people were being treated for shock.

Police said the blast took place on Shaul HaMelech Street which runs just behind the Kiriya, Israel's sprawling defence ministry.

TV images showed the bus with its windows blown out and its metal frame contorted from the force of the blast, in images reminiscent of scenes from the 2000-2005 Palestinian uprising.

The front window was completely shattered and glass littered the floor as the wounded were loaded into ambulances by an army of medics.

Netanyahu's spokesman said it was "a terrorist attack".

"A bomb exploded on a bus in central Tel Aviv. This was a terrorist attack. Most of the injured suffered only mild injuries," said Ofir Gendelman on his official Twitter account.

The blast came as Clinton held talks in Jerusalem over a Gaza truce with Netanyahu, with a US embassy spokesman confirming the two had held their second round of talks in as many days.

An Israeli bus was last targeted in March 2011 when a bomb left at a Jerusalem stop ripped through a bus, killing a British woman and wounding over 30 other people.

Israel- targets missile launch sites, huge criticism due to civilian casualties. Palestine- target civilians, rejoice when they hit targets. Am I missing something?

      wendy.webb.980 - 2012-11-21 15:02

Hamas (as well as Hezbollah in the north)have their bases in residential, ie civilian areas. It's impossible to go after these cowardly organisations without hitting civilians

      wallace.william.944 - 2012-11-21 15:15

yes you are, how are the UN and international media centers reporting on the conflict missile launch sites? the question you need to ask is, why are they targeting these reporting sites, what do they (Apartheid Israel) need to hide from the international community who gets their info from the warzone itself?

      gianni.blayse - 2012-11-21 15:17

we can argue about who started what the whole day. if you think israel is not in anyway oppressing palestinians, restricting their freedoms and ensuring their disempowerment through economic policies, and enforcing these policies using the most advanced army in the world, then you know nothing of what goes on there and you should do some research. do you thinnk palestinnians are just firing rockets for fun? do you honestly believe they live a good life and israel never does anything to provoke this rocketfire? please do some research

      jason.heineberg - 2012-11-21 15:40

Well, if you want someone to treat you well, don't make things explode? "I'm sorry I shot a missile at you, you provoked me" just doesn't seem like a valid excuse for anything. Look I'd also be wary of my neighbors if they kept trying to kill me and declared I don't have a right to exist. You can't really play nice with a terrorist, unfortunately. If Palestinians were serious about peace they wouldn't back Hamas or shoot rockets. No they don't live a good life, but if you want to behave like an uncivilized savage you can't really expect people to treat you well. Its the same thing over and over in this order- "1. Hamas attack Israel. 2. Israel stands by their "we won't be bullied when surrounded by so many enemies, show them not to mess with us without expecting severe repercussions" policy and retaliates hard. 3. Arab owned media conglomerates report half the story and thus half the world forgets Israel are targeting terrorists, not civilians. 4. Palestinians realize Israel are serious business, back down and agree to a cease fire (for a little while at least)." Rinse and repeat over and over.

      gianni.blayse - 2012-11-21 15:54

jason the fact that your are jewish and have probably had zionism drilled into your brain from a young age belies you. im jewish and also used to think zionism was grand old policy that gave poor oppressed jews a homeland. now after having lived in israel (and i have no problem with the existence of israel outside the occupied territories) i realize zionism is racist and unfair and that it is a policy which has continually oppressed and pushed back palestinians to the fringes. do you really think hamas started all this with rocketfire? do you really think conglomerate arab media dictates the truth to all of us? tell me then why you, the israel supporter, gets more thumbs up then me who is trying to give a more balanced view. because you are all brainwashed by mainstream media such as CNN etc, who portrays the conflict in a certain way instead of showing a clear truth - that the most advanced army bullies and exercises its racism over poor peasants with homemade weapons

      wallace.william.944 - 2012-11-21 16:13

@Jason if you build an Apartheid wall around me denying me access to hospitals, my work/income, water and food supplies and basically suffocating me till death... then i will definately bomb you or at least do whatever i can for my freedom from your Apartheid system

      jason.heineberg - 2012-11-21 16:27

I suppose you think Palestinians built up that infrastructure that they are now denied access to (because they can't play nice).? Also this isn't a case of what came first, because the bombings definitely came before the fences, so you can't say that the bombings are a result of the fences (the whole reason they are there- to ensure the safety of civilians). You can't play the victim whilst on the offensive, its a terrible justification.

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-11-21 18:46

Agree with you Jason... So do most Christians who are killed in Egypt, Nigeria and Iraq by Muslims, most Hindus who are being killed in India and Buddhists who are facing Islamic terror in Thailand, Bali etc...women's right groups and gay right group agree with Israel too... The free world agree with Israel, we just don't shout as loud as your haters... But we here.

      ali.asgar.58323 - 2012-11-22 06:05

Hi Joy. Did you know that Israel existed for 1300 years before the Roman empire, in exactly the same area that they are fighting for right now? That's right, I'm talking about 1360**BC**. Now, If you were forced out of your country, land and home... only to be scattered all over the world as slaves and refugees, would you not want to eventually get back to your birth place? You know, that place you (a jew) have been facing and praying to for the last 2000 years. Please tell me more about how they never had rights to the land.

      dinesh.chetty.77 - 2012-11-21 15:05

Tony, then Jews should understand that the Palestinians are scattered all over the world since 1948, forced out their land and home to live in as refugees, would you not want to eventually get back to your birth place. VIVA the 4.6 million Palestinians refugees.

Gianni, I know that the average, poor and hardworking Palestinian has to go through extensive security checks whenever they enter, cross or leave an Israeli declared territory, all the while, the rich Palestinian businessmen sit in luxury hotels/buildings/restaurants enjoying life. I also know that the reason for those security checks is to prevent bitter and angry people sneaking explosives into populated areas.

      gianni.blayse - 2012-11-21 15:37

well tony seems like you get my point and you seem to see that it is a harmful cycle that wont go away. I just know that while i dont condone any violence I will not support the idf., with its record of violence and bullying, over poor people fighting for some room to breathe. if i was palestinian and had no freedom of movement and no freedom to advance myself in life i would also hate israel. it is a problematic situation but i will not blindly support either side, but as i said i will more willingly support the underdogs and those that are getting the brunt of the punishment

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 16:08

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

      tony.lapson - 2012-11-21 16:30

If the Palestinian people didn't have to enter Israeli territory for hard, menial work to earn cash, would they still be "oppressed". If they were all rich and had their every need met (like Palestinian businessmen), would they be oppressed by the massive inconvenience of dealing with harsh security checks every day to get to work? Or would they be able to improve life in their own areas without the need to deal with another IDF soldier. As for the bullying and violence? Within hours of the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel, four of the seven countries of the Arab League at that time, namely Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Syria invaded territory in the former British Mandate of Palestine on 14–15 May 1948. When the British demarcated Israeli territory in the area just before the end of WWII, the Jews were only happy to move into the 'Holy land' that they have cared for their whole life. This caused civil unrest between the Jews (who were living in Palestine since ancient times), and the Arab Palestinians who once lived in peace with the Jews. The 1947 Civil unrest ensued. The Jewish started getting killed in minor attacks all over Palestine. As you can imagine Jews who used to live in co-existence with Palestinians very quickly moved into the newly formed Israel for safety and a better life. Any Jews who remained in Palestine were targeted and exterminated.

      catlover - 2012-11-21 17:31

Joy, if you read up, you will realise that underneath the mosque lies the ruins of the temple.....the same temple that came down in the times of the bible.....the same temple that LOT was not supposed to turn around and look at but did, and turned to a pillar of salt. The Israelis were there before. After the mosque was built on purpose I might add, on that mountain, on top of that Temple, the Jews are not allowed to go near there for fear of their lives. Yes they get attacked, they stay away. The muslim/Palestinians that built the Mosque dont even use it. Their kids play soccer etc. Also the open jail that you all refer to, was Israerli land before. Israelis were living there. The Palestinians wanted it. Israel took the Jews living there out. They gave it to the Palestinians. There were no fences until Hamas moved in and started bombing buses and innocent people up. People do your homework, read up. We do it, why cant you? Dont be so filled with hatred.

  • tommy.jones.754918 - 2012-11-21 14:34

I don't get it. I can understand civilian casualties due to collateral damage. If these bombers attacked a military vehicles, and some bystander got injured, that I can understand. But going directly at civilians is just not on.

  • cyanideandhappiness - 2012-11-21 14:36

It's a lie, a false flag, to give Israel enough reason to attack and remove the thorn in their side that is the Palestinian people just as peace was about to be brokered, and move one step closer to removing Syria and Iran by placing blame on them for the insurgency. I believe Israel and US intelligence are running Hamas as they run Al-Qaeda, the great enemy that the US used to give reason to steamroll into several countries and further their own self interest. The US supported the uprising in Libya and now Syria, admitting many times that the rebels responsible for the violence were in fact Al-Qaeda militants, the very people they once said they despised. Hamas has been used here in the same manner. What is happening here is Genocide, and any sane Palestinian or Israeli would not support any of this violence, no matter what side you are coming from. First thing they should do is turn on their own leaders and remove them, they are the ones who have created this mess, not the children in the street, not the people praying in the mosque or the synagogue, not the doctors, teachers or cleaners. They must remove their corrupt leaders, and only then will they be able to heal the wounds of a long and unnecessary war between these two sides. Time to wake up. Do not associate this action with the common man, this is the action of the beast that is the political spectrum with a fist or iron, and it has nothing to do with the welfare of the average person on any side.

Israel broke away from SA... It was Sweden that supported SA after. Anyways, in a world where 50 countries hate you because you a Jew country, I don't blame Israel for looking for friends. Today I support them not because of Israel but because of the many Jews who helped with the struggle even though they could have benefited from the racist system continuing. Ask Madiba about the Jews and see why even he visited Israel. Madiba wanted a viable Palestinian state but not at the cost of Israel which is what the Muslims want.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 23:07

Wallace, you're overstating it. There was a strong debate in the Israeli government, among Israelis and the Jewish people generally whether or not the Israeli government should have relations with the Apartheid government. It was an on-and-off affair. Human consciousness learns and grows. Are you aware that our present government licenses corporations like MTN, which profit from the most oppressive regimes on Earth?

  • sean.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-21 14:41

Anybody that supports Hamas supports their charter. "The Hamas Charter (or Covenant), issued in 1988, outlined the organization's position on many issues at the time, identifies Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine and declares its members to be Muslims who "fear God and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors." The charter states "our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious" and calls for the eventual creation of an Islamic state in Palestine, in place of Israel and the Palestinian Territories,[35] and the obliteration or dissolution of Israel."

Just a plain common garden Christian in fact. But I LOVE ISRAEL and will defend it's right to exist AS A JEWISH STATE forever. No one pays me to do so and I do not belong to any 'organisations'. For me it's a duty to refute lies and call the bluff on hate. Israel is not a perfect state. It has complex issues and I wish that it did better on some of them. And neither are all Jews perfect either. Israeli jails are full of Jewish criminals -- sent there by Arab and Jewish judges and magistrates. But the steps towards the creation of the State of Israel was one of the few achievements of the international community. It's simply a question of good verses evil. Anti-semites are evil. I want something good to say for myself on judgement day. If I have nothing but my Zionism it will probably be enough. However 'good' you are if you hate an entire people then you are a friend of the evil one.

Zionism does not equal Judaisim. Even the founder of Zionist said that JEWS must convert to Christianity in order to deceive Christians and infiltrate there structures in order to reclaim Israel. They have used the Jewish religion and the holocaust as a defense weapon. Even most true Jews are realising this now and wiping there hands clean of Zionism

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-22 04:51

Wallace, again, to be credible you have to provide a source when you make a statement like, "Even most true Jews are realising this now and wiping there hands clean of Zionism". Otherwise it's completely meaningless.

"Hamas welcomes the martyrdom operation" - they do not even know what they are doing themselves. There was no martyr there. The bomber placed the bomb on the bus and ran away. Ha Ha Ha Ha :) Stupid morons. With so many "fanatics" around in the muslim world, I believe that their religion is just a form of brainwashing

  • steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-11-21 15:15

Maybe the Israelis should give these people a good hiding like they did to the Egyptians during the 6 day war. They have the fire-power to deal with this swiftly, because it seems like Hamas is just not interested in any other way.

      ali.asgar.58323 - 2012-11-22 05:57

Six day war? Well its 8 days and rockets are still hitting Tel Aviv. The bus bombing is a natural response to the zionist massacres.

Savages that blatently attack civilians, they are one lvel above humans and then praise god in the mosque? Isreal must defend their right to safety in their democratic country by all means possible and attack till that vipers nest is cleaned out.

      sibusiso.hlongwane.92 - 2012-11-21 15:22

Stick your head back in the sand you.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 23:14

Sibusiso speaking to himself, but unfortunately not listening.

  • deon.meiring - 2012-11-21 15:17

God is great, God is great. An operation in the heart of the Zionist entity," rang out from the mosque's loudspeakers....To praise God for killing people on a bus is SICK!! This is not my God they are praying to......sick!

      wallace.william.944 - 2012-11-21 15:33

this is funny, because this is probably what the people on Noahs Ark were saying to GOD when God destroyed the evil people of the land with a flood. You probably have a different GOD to Noah Israel will eventually experience their own "flood", GOD Willing

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 23:15

Wallace, what a vengeful, low desire you're holding for the region. Don't be surprised if there's more suffering. You're causing it.

  • KyleVDMerwe7 - 2012-11-21 15:23

Actually hope Israel doesn't stop now, the people in Gaza are monsters, dragging people though streets and celebrating terrorism

      tommy.jones.754918 - 2012-11-21 16:06

And he would approve of your: "Israel will eventually experience their own "flood", GOD Willing" Tell me Wallace, are you a decedent of Ismael.

'william wallace' Jesus was Jewish. He spoke Aramiac. He followed Jewish customs. He attended the synagogue. He was circumcised according to the Jewish tradition. In fact Jesus himself was not sent to anyone but the Jewish nation. He said so Himself. He sent His followers to preach the gospel to 'The Nations'. In the time of Jesus Jews were the majority inhabitants of the region including Judea and Samaria. Before most of them were kicked out by the Romans. But they went came back. As they came back after the Babylonian captivity.... and the Persian one.

  • Sibusiso - 2012-11-21 15:26

Israel ,in its current form ,is a threat to world peace.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 16:14

Sibusiso, with his current thinking, is unwittingly supporting the oppression of the Palestinians without even knowing it. Not smart. Not smart at all.

      tom.carrington.395 - 2012-11-21 16:30

how is that so? hamas starts and then cries when they get smashed!!!

Israel and Palestine...I'm getting tired of this!!

  • tom.carrington.395 - 2012-11-21 16:28

Hamas uses their own people as human shields & are happy when they die so that they can draw world attention and blame Israel.

  • catlover - 2012-11-21 17:15

Well if Israel had any thoughts about a peace treaty, its not going to happen now.

  • dan.cooper.9634 - 2012-11-21 18:07
