Chavez denounces West over Libya

2011-08-22 09:04

Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a staunch of ally of embattled strongman Muammar Gaddafi, slammed Western powers on Sunday for "destroying Tripoli with their bombs", as rebels surged to seize control of the Libyan capital.

"Today we are seeing images of the democratic governments of Europe, along with the supposedly democratic government of the United States destroying Tripoli with their bombs," Chavez said.

Television news footage aired out of Libya showed rebels forces pushing towards Libya on Sunday and late into the night capturing keys areas of the capital, including the symbolic Green Square, but not of bombing related to the Nato campaign that backed the anti-Gaddafi alliance.

The bombs, Chavez said however, were "falling on schools, hospitals, workplaces, farmland.

"Let's pray to God for the Libyan people," he said.

Last week Chavez along with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, both arch US foes, jointly denounced the West's "imperialist aggression" in Libya.

Chavez - Gaddafi's main supporter in Latin America - has consistently denounced the months-long military operation in Libya claiming it is an oil grab by Western powers.

      Teemachine - 2011-08-22 13:26

Hey guys just want to ask. Are the rebels not Libyan themselves and are they not fighting because they have been oppressed and murdered by the government? How long had Gaddafi been in power? Do you believe in dictatorships? Do some research and get back to me. About Venezuela Demographs: 50% mestizo, or white, mostly descendants of the Europeans and Arabs by 29%, 10% African descent, and indigenous people with only 1% of the total population. Pick up a book guys come on.

You are blinding yourself to who Gadhafi really is and what he really has been doing to Libya and Libyans. Just turn on your TV, watch and listen to what millions of Libyans are saying.

  • naodeytekle - 2011-08-22 13:57

you ignorant fools. Chavez is a great leader. and gaddafi was one of the greatest leader. NATO was not supposed to take sides in a civil war. it is illegal and immoral. dont you find that at least suspicious. chavez is smart cause he doesnt watch the corporate owned media made to brainwash to believe that anone who doesnt bow down to the west is A "regime". chavez recently asked for all his gold reserve back from the western banks cause he knows everyone of the are going broke with the collapse of us dollar and the death of euro. open your mind not your eyes. go to youtube, investigate cause Innocent people are dying.

      crackerr - 2011-08-22 15:09

So if you wish to kill humans you just start a civil war? You are strange in your outlook. If we people of the world do not start looking out for one another against criminals no-one else will. What nonsense the idea that you buy insurance against justice and decency by baptizing your actions as civil war?

      slg - 2011-08-22 17:08

Do you support the right of Libyans to vote and live free from oppression? If not you're going down with your brother leader. End of story. Unfortunately you've allowed yourself to remain as a child with Gadhafi your father. You have to grow up now, and quick. Your life is in danger.

      Anton - 2011-08-22 17:28

Naodeytekle, Unfortunately, there are also those, who still believe Idi Amin ,was a great leader !!!! Fortunately, they, and you, are in a very small minority!!!!
