Beijing - A Chinese freighter has been hijacked by pirates off southern Iran, the Chinese embassy in Tehran reported on Friday.

The cargo ship, the Xianghuamen, belongs to Nanjing Ocean Shipping Co Ltd in Nanjing, eastern China, the embassy said in a posting on its website.

The ship was commandeered on Friday morning in the Gulf of Oman near the south Iranian port of Chabahar, the embassy said.

The embassy is in touch with Iranian authorities and has asked the government to take all necessary steps to recover the vessel and its crew safely, according to the statement.

There were no other details, including the number of pirates or crew.

An official with Nanjing Ocean Shipping contacted by telephone confirmed the hijacking, but would not provide further information.

A Chinese freighter commandeered near an Iranian port.... Sounds more like a covert delivery of sorts, under the guise of piracy.

There is nothing covet about Chinese/Iran trade relations. Both the Chinese and the Indians have been vocal in their intention to continue trade with Iran.

That you support Iran is consistent with your wrong world view Fidel

      Fidel - 2012-04-07 07:34

Your binary world view is pathetic and immature. I am neither against the US nor with Iran.

Fidel ...You are a liar....Your views and postings on this site has been nothing but anti Jewish, anti American and anti Western world

      Fidel - 2012-04-07 09:05

I bow to no one in my dislike of American Imperialism and zionist occupation of Palestine. If that makes me anti-those things, so be it.

Must be a conspiracy by the US and UK to cause trouble between Iran and China. Dammit, colonialism and Western Imperialism strikes again!
