City to raise legal age for prostitutes

2013-02-26 20:26

Amsterdam - Amsterdam's mayor says the city plans to raise the minimum age of prostitutes from 18 to 21 and force brothels to close in the early morning hours.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Eberhard van der Laan said the decision follows from a desire to crack down on crime in the city's famed Red Light District and protect sex workers - mostly women - from abuse.

Van der Laan said the windows, where scantily clad sex workers try to entice customers, would be closed from 04:00 to 09:00.

Prostitution was legalised in the Netherlands in 2006, and has been tolerated in Amsterdam for centuries, but the city has been tightening the rules and shuttered a third of the brothel windows in the period 2007-2009.

. Actually, prostitution has been legal in the Netherlands since 1830. And up to 1980, it was unlawful to profit from prostitution, with other words, pimping was illegal. It is believed tha the lax of control of the pimps, in the last 30 years, has brought along the gangsters and.....the drugs. But it is still a well regulated business, as well from the police as the health department. One of the great benefits, of having this industry organised, is that you will NOT find an underage girl selling her body in Amsterdam. Just for this reason, this ,organised, prostitution, makes a lot of sence!!

I believe in an open society which I regard as civilised. Why hide, by illegalising, what is impossible to hide and which by doing so you promote such scourges as HIV, STDs and underground drug and other criminal syndicates. Legalisation makes sense.

I believe in an open society which I regard as civilised. For it does not make any sense to me why the things that are there, and which everyone can see, should not be acknowledged. By hiding prostitition we are actually stupidly promoting the spreading of HIV, STDs and underground drug and other criminal syndicates.
