Concordia captain ordered back on board

Rome - The Italian coast guard pleaded in vain for the captain of the capsized Italian cruise ship to return on board to oversee the evacuation but he refused, according to what a leading Italian newspaper said was a recording of the conversation.

Corriere della Sera put the tape, which it said was recorded by the coast guard, on its website.

It conforms with reports that have leaked out in the past few days since the Costa Concordia hit a rock on Friday night. Six people were killed and 29 are still missing.

Captain Francesco Schettino is in jail, accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship.

The recording says in part:

Coast guard to captain (who has already left the ship):

"There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board.

"Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?!

"Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!"

Captain to Coast Guard: "Please ...."

Coast Guard to captain: "There is no please about it. Go back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!"

What a very sad story...those poor people, the captain deserves whats coming his way..

Agreed. I'm usually the first to say that not everything has to be blamed on somebody, but this dude appears to have been responsible for the accident in the first place, responsible for sounding an alarm an hour late, and again responsible for not following protocol in getting people off the ship. He must be held accountable now!

I am very glad I don't have to live in his shoes.Publically branded a killer, a coward and an idiot. Apart from his punishment, which he deserves, how does one live with this burden - given you have a conscience

Captain should be the last to leave the ship. This fake captain should be dealt with harshly.

Typical of people in a position of responsibility - they all behave the same throughout the World.

David I think you might be surprised there. As an adult I both responsible and accountable for my actions.

  • Terry - 2012-01-17 17:50

That captain is going away for a very long time - and so he should!

  • David - 2012-01-17 18:10

@Carpejugulim. I wasn't throwuing my hands in exasperation when I said they all b ehave the same allover. I concur with sentiments expressed - like all others, he should be made to pay for his deeds.
