Kingston - Jamaican authorities have seized nearly 635kg of tightly compressed marijuana during a raid in a north coast beach town.

The police force's transnational crime and narcotics division arrested two men and seized 39 bags stuffed with marijuana during a six-hour operation on Wednesday in the Success Beach district of the northern parish of St James. The area is not far from the tourist mecca of Montego Bay.

The identities of the suspects have not been released. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The US State Department says Jamaica is the Caribbean's largest producer and exporter of marijuana.

Marijuana plants are grown mostly on the sides of mountains or hidden among other crops.

like dagga, alcohol should be made illegal aswell. It is a despicable substance thats the cause of many evils. And all consumers know that thrs more bad than good in it. No alcoholic or drug addict planned their fate.

So you educated and civilised people have parties where you get drunk and speak and do what you not in full control of. Some even puke and soil themselves. Is that being civilised and educated?

abuzakariyah.abrahams - How about rather giving people freedom of choice. Just because some don't like it does not mean others should not be allowed to use it. Everybody seems to want to control what everyone else does these days..just mind your own business.

      abuzakariyah.abrahams - 2013-01-17 13:46

why not give people freedom of choice and legalise dagga and tik then simon?

      jezuz.onlin - 2013-01-17 18:35

Many broken hearts for sale. This bit of news must have many South Africans slavering and writing letters.

  • stirrer.stirrer - 2013-01-17 10:37

Why is this news? Here in dear ol' SA they seize it tons at a time.

      fidel.uncensored - 2013-01-17 10:49

It's the stupidity of banning marijuana. In SA it is a valueless plant that our government has no reason to waste law enforcement resources on.
